I am about to enter the world of interchangeable lenses. Are there any reliable mail order sources of used lenses? As I have a limited budget, I would like to keep costs down while I learn what lenses would get most use. I can invest in new ones later if the used ones don't do a good enough job. I will be purchasing a Canon T7, so I'm specifically interested in EF and EF-S lenses.

Canon, not cannon. Sorry, the grammar police in me rose to the surface. When you said "my dad shoots cannon" I was imagining the old boy out on the front yard with a howitzer.

Are there any generally suggested shutter speeds when shooting birds in flight or does shutter speed need to be keyed on the species? Species vary so greatly in their flight speeds that I was wondering if the speed should be roughly set to match the species.

The larger the bird, the slower the wings. I typically shoot at 1/2000.

My dad shoots cannon and I shoot nikon so I’m at a bit of a loss. I just wanted to post his issue here and see if any cannon users have experienced this.

He experienced this trying to utilize Nd filters to take pics of a rocket launch. He says that when using aperture priority to get a base exposure Using 2.8 then puts the filters on And changes to bulb the aperature automatically reverts to f8. He says this occurs when using any auto setting to get a base exposure but it does not occur when Starting in Manual then switching to bulb.

Any ideas?

Doesn't happen on my 7D. I can set the aperture anywhere I want in Bulb mode. I guess have him dig through his manual, or just stick with Manual mode.

Is there a way to obtain the shutter count on a Canon Rebel T6i or am i just supposed to keep a count in my head?

Try this one:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/canon-eos-digital-info/

It's finicky about the order.

Turn on the camera.
Plug in the USB cable.
Start the program.
Click Connect.

Here's another one to try:

I love my canon 77d and get the
55-250 lens its image stablized. Don't think the 75-300 is stablized. Also the t7i is a sweet camera. look at B&H for good price. Might push the budget a bit but think of it as long term investment. First choice 77d then t7i

You are correct. The 75-300mm lens is not stabilized.

I certainly understand a shutter might "quit". Curious to hear if any UHH members have actually replaced one - what camera - it's final shutter count.

Thanks for indulging me.
Stay safe & well.

I picked up a used Canon 7D from my local store, and eventually discovered the shutter wasn't working properly. It sounded fine, but at 1/3200 everything was a lot darker than it should've been. At any shutter speed above that, everything was black. Since it was within the first 30 days, the store paid to send it off to Canon to get the shutter replaced. Canon said it was shorted. It only had about 18,000 actuations on it when it went off to the shop. Still working like a charm, and everything was cleaned, and the firmware was updated.

I currently use two 580EX ll flashes for my Canon cameras. I am thinking about upgrading as I want to use more flash, but do not want to pay what Canon wants me to pay for a flash unit that will not be used all that much. I am looking for something with very good quality and will be able to be fired through some type of a trigger. Thanks for your suggestions.

I haven't used it a lot, but I have a Godox that cost a fraction of the Canon equivalent, and gives perfectly good results. The build quality seems fine, so I expect it to last a long time unless the internal components aren't derated properly.

This is probably a dumb question. I seldom use the exposure compensation button on my D7200. Instead, I adjust the aperture or shutter to fit my need. Why should I be using the EC button for adjustment? It appears that I'm missing something important. Is it only speed and convenience?

I've not used it until recently, and even now only sparingly. It comes in handy when I'm in aperture priority, and the camera decides to make the photo a bit brighter than I'd like. I'll dial it down about one stop, and that's usually fine. The trick is to remember to put it back when you're done with it; otherwise, everything in that mode will be one stop darker, and you'll wonder what's wrong. That's why I often just use manual mode for total control of the exposure.

BTW, EC could come in handy when taking shots in snow-covered conditions to keep the snow from turning out blue or grey.

30 Sec!! That seems excessive. You will get streaks from the earths rotation.

But I guess it depends on lens and iso settings.

Use a fast lens, 3 sec at ISO 1200 should be more than enough.

My point was, a longer exposure will allow a much higher chance to find it, then they can adjust their exposure accordingly once they locate it.

That depends on how clear your atmosphere is. In Kentucky, 3 sec at ISO 1200 won't show anything.

Im haven't tried the hi res mode on my em5 2 yet because I've been using some old Nikon glass that probably doesn't have enough resolving power to take advantage of it. I just ordered the m zuiko 7-14 2.8.
I thought I read somewhere that a firmware update to the em1 2 would take a separate exposure to combine in camera with the hi res shot to compensate for any subject movement. It would be at the camera's native resolution but I guess if you didn't pixel peep close enough you wouldn't notice.
My question is to anyone who has the em5 2 if that firmware update applies to it? I know I could always do it manually in PP, but would rather have the camera do it for me.
Thanks in advance for any replies.
Just kidding about the comet, but I'm becoming frustrated in trying to see it. I have the Stellarium app on my iphone and have pinpointed where it's supposed to be. What's the best time?

Take a 30-second exposure with a wide (18mm will do) lens in the direction you know the comet should be. Once you find it in that image, use that as a reference to home in on it with a larger lens.
