I currently use two 580EX ll flashes for my Canon cameras. I am thinking about upgrading as I want to use more flash, but do not want to pay what Canon wants me to pay for a flash unit that will not be used all that much. I am looking for something with very good quality and will be able to be fired through some type of a trigger. Thanks for your suggestions.

Neewer. I bought a pair of their 750 models packaged with triggers and a controller. I shoot Nikon but, like you, I refuse to pay the obscene prices Nikon wants for name brand accessories. I haven't used them a lot but they have worked flawlessly when I have used them. And I can guarantee that you won't see the difference and no one will know that you are using non-OEM gear.

I went with Yongnuo flashes and their wireless remotes after I had already bought two Canon flashes (430 and 580EX-II) and PocketWizard remotes a few years earlier. Now the newer Yongnuo flashes have the wireless remotes built in the flash for a lot less than Canon's flashes.

The joys of upgrading?

I generally agree. I've also got Yongnuo and Godox units for particular purposes with my Nikon system. They may not last as long, but I can replace the Neewer units I use most three times before they get to the price of the equivalent Nikon unit. Functionally, they are, at least in my opinion, equally good. Their build quality is a little lower, so you might need to be a little bit gentler with them than the OEM.

The only real drawback is their "Chinglish" instruction manuals, which are pretty hard to decipher. There is enough material on the Interwebz to make up for this, though, and you can always ask here - plenty of Hoggers use Neewer gear, even if they don't like to admit to it.

Are you looking for speedlights or are you looking for off camera battery powered strobe?

Which model did you get? I am going to go in this direction. I ready through this info and it appears as though I can two flashes and the built in trigger for a lot less than 1 new Canon.

This was many years ago so I got the YN-568EX II in March, 2015 ($124 then), the YN-565 EX a week earlier ($102), YN-622C-TX (2 of them) plus the YN-622C RX E-TTL controller transceiver for $139 in Feb, 2015 and then a pair of YN-622C in April (in case I wanted to use the Canon flashes) for $77. Thank goodness for Amazon's order history?

A pair of PocketWizard Plus II in I bought in 2009 were $169 for comparison (no TTL at that time). My wife bought my first one which is no good without at least one more so I bought this pair after she got me the first one. This worked with the two Canon flashes.

When PW introduced their mini and flex models (TTL for Canon to begin with) is when I found Yongnuo (probably recommended on UHH by other members back then).

I went for Yongnuo - their clone of the Canon 600.

I haven't used it a lot, but I have a Godox that cost a fraction of the Canon equivalent, and gives perfectly good results. The build quality seems fine, so I expect it to last a long time unless the internal components aren't derated properly.

Godox, specifically the V1 round head. I’m a pro and shoot Nikon and the light output is better than Nikon‘a current top of the line SB 5000 for less than half the price. Used both of them at a wedding in September. The Godox blew me away.
That also have probably the most extensive line of lighting to offer.
Bigger units, like the AD600 battery powered monolight and AD 200. I have both of those as well. Love the system.
