Unless the original questioner is working with Nat. Geo. I don't think he/she will have a team to carry or activate things. I thought we were talking about an ordinary Joe/Jane wanting to do cave photos?

I wasn’t working for Nat Geo, just a member of a local club. Getting 3 or 4 people together was easy with a little planning.

However safety is important, as is having the right equipment. If it isn’t a commercial cave there are lots of things that can go wrong and put people in danger since you are essentially alone in the dark.

Perhaps we need to know more about the OP’s plans and desires.

Caving / spelunking is fun and rewarding, but can also be fatal.

Note, real wild cave tours are hard on the knees!!!!

You can mitigate that by making knee pads by cutting up old inner tubes. Works really well.

To protect camera equipment I have a couple of WWII ammo boxes lined with foam. Water sealed they can withstand more than I can.
And a tripod.
For lighting I got team members to stand around the cavern and manually fire the flashes, four or five if I recall.
It turned out pretty well.

Good luck and don’t go caving / spelunking alone.

I was digging around in some old stuff and found these. I assume they are good. There are two of them and if any one can use them I will send them for postage. If not, any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Damn! I thought it was a sheep!

Call it whatever you want, but your lens is a fisheye and not a wide angle lens. It is a special effects lens. The significant curving you refer to is intentional. It is not a distortion that needs to be corrected. Unfortunately you apparently purchased the wrong lens. What you seem to want is a rectilinear lens, not a fisheye. You really need to consider selling it and getting a lens that actually meets you needs. The results you get with this lens probably won't ever satisfy you regardless of how much you try to straighten the edges.

I have an 8mm fisheye (Samyang / Vivitar) and a Canon 10-22 zoom. Both excellent lenses, but it takes thought and planning to achieve the results you want.

Perhaps planning and practice could be useful…, maybe even visualizing the image you are looking for…

I also agree with Paul and Trix. I have some FL / FD lenses modified with the Ed Mika adapters. No intermediate glass and full infinity focus, but they are still manual focus and no auto stopdown. However I enjoy using them, but they are not a replacement for a modern lens.

A mirrorless camera with body stabilization is a promising path to pursue.

Anyone using this lens - especially on an AFS-C body? I'd be interested in hearing your experiences and seeing some of your photos.

This is a Samyang lens, sold under various brand names, the optics are good, construction is ok. I got mine for about $175, and have been extremely pleased.
Apologies I don’t have access to images right now, computer rebuild.

If you can get one at the right price I would recommend it.

Why do people care so much about shuttercount anyway?

There are many ways to find it on Canon cameras. Some used to be free, others inexpensive, but it’s only of interest when buying or selling a camera. Just like a used car, it could run forever or die tomorrow.

Are people paranoid or just deluding themselves?

Pretty soon you will be comparing SF to Disneyland.

I don’t need to compare SF to anywhere since I have accurate local knowledge and real life experience.

For one, I wouldn’t want to live in Disneyland, nor do I wear a Mickey Mouse watch. Although I’m wondering if you do!

Been there myself many times since 1978. This is not the same state as back then. Yes we are also better off not being in this sad state of affairs.

I wouldn’t describe SF as being a sad state of affairs. Perhaps it is where you go or how you present yourself that leads to your bad experiences.

Just sayin what the rest of the country is thinking including friends and family members who have left.

It’s easy to repeat things, especially if you have no knowledge or sense.

At least I have direct local experience, and I pay attention. Things are far from perfect but the issues are being addressed steadily.

I’d rather live here in SF than other places I have mentioned. Yes there is a homeless problem but we have initiatives to address (some) of that.

One of the reasons that we have a homeless problem is that our climate is fairly benign. If I had to be homeless I’d rather be here than in New York or Detroit and so on.

Perhaps we are better off without your friends and family.

Just stay out of that cesspool state. They will wise up when the tourists don’t come and people leave. No money no state.

And your comment is worth what?

The cesspool that you’re swimming in?

I’m sorry you are experiencing those problems, Socal is not San Francisco. Where abouts are you?

You live where? In SanFran or SoCal?

If so, do you read the newspapers? Do you visit read neighborhood social media site? Do you drive around and look out the window of the car? Have you been downtown lately? Have you stepped over people sleeping on the sidewalk? Do you see the homeless camps in public spaces? Do you smell the stink? Or do you live in a gated community surrounded by private security and receive all your groceries and goods while safely inside the guarded gates?

I live in SoCal and there is a huge problem here.

And it’s about to get worse as the LA DA has all but stopped prosecuting crimes and is working to free 10s of thousands of prisoners many are violent offenders.

I live in San Francisco, and I pay attention to the news on a daily basis. I live in a neighborhood with a significant percentage of Asian Americans, not a gated community.

I re-emphasize that many of the negative comments come from people with no direct experience at all, or not for many years.

So, if you want to make credible comments, do some real research.
