Show Boating
First, I like the concept of your photo. with that said, your looking for a little help. 1) your shot should be vertical to get more of that great tree with the boys, their vertical so that's the shot you want. Try more in camera editing before you hit the shutter to get less of unwanted backgrounds.2) remember to use the rule thirds on your subject, personally
I like the right side. 3) learn to use the camera settings to your advantage.

Graham, another great photograph and it is all that everyone said about it, but I believe it falls short of being the best it could be! Some may not agree, but if you included the peek in the photo you would improve this image ten fold by adding all those great angles and lines that you all ready have working for you! If you crop the present image at the top of the beam you can clean up those unfinished lines. These are just my thoughts.

I see it's starting to work, but I would not crop the left side and the right a little less, so the subject looks like it's moving into the scene. I tried it and it just seemed to have more impact!
Great photo

Hand held, almost 30 year old image. Back when my vision was clearer and had steadier hands!
