Had a very close encounter with one while climbing in Linville Gorge about 40 years ago. Climbing up a rock face my wife's feet were in crevasse with my hands beside them, as I pulled myself up to eye level with the crevasse there he was stretched out in the dark. He was a whopper, his scales were as big as my fingernails. He was less than 1 foot from my face, and the drop was at least 100 feet down. Luckily, it was getting dark in the gorge and he was probably tucked in for the night! We passed without incident. His head had to be as big as my hand.
