check with west point regarding access... before 911 you could drive in and have easy access to the whole place, except flirtation walk and barracks area.

after 911 they allowed access only through guided tours arranged at the visitors center right outside the gate, (used to be ladycliff college).

i haven't been back in a while and am told they have relaxed restrictions - it would be worthwhile to check...

racism....

and lauren t - i'm sorry for your experience, at different times and different places we can insert the stories of a group of ill-mannered thugs behaving poorly - youth, college-kids, jocks, "those people", etc.
imagine being black and experiencing that same inconsiderate behavior on a daily basis.

subject and what you want to do will help you determine what's best.

sometimes, when you need to stop action only the strobe will do.

sometimes i like continuous light because you can see exactly what's it's doing and my feeling is it's a more "even', less punchy light... a subjective view/preference.

certainly upload your pictures to stock sites...

pursue a niche... what sites/mags/media use your type shots... check their picture usage policies, send to art director/media person, (call and email them)...

it's a tough market for any photographer... everyone thinks they can do it... prices have dropped accordingly.

making the photograph is, at best, half the job - hit a niche. counter-intuitively, cast a wide net... cross your fingers.

most all have fun.

Shoot in colour and convert in Lightroom and use the colour sliders to adjust, your results will be far superior to monochrome from your camera

EDIT: Better still, invest in NIK Silver Efex Pro.

better still, invest in tri-x!

maybe we shouldn't be saving all these images....??? are they all really that good?

let's say they are... well then why hasn't someone "beaten a path" to my door to exhibit them? yup i guess i'm undiscovered... seems i heard this story before - a la vivian maier.

well if i have just a few high quality images and after i've shed this mortal coil my heirs will be rich - the fewer the better, the richer they'll be!

other than "be ruthless" i don't think there is one right answer.

sometimes something appeals to me, i think it's a good shot, even art. others may or may not get it. i still like it and show it. at some point i may see there lack of interest and get it - or may not. i enjoy it!

the thing i've found very valuable is an bi-annual critiquing session with someone whose "eye" i respect - and is also ruthless. sit and go through a bunch of pictures i think are worthwhile and he/she critiques. it may be as brief as a yes/no, or a more lengthy conversation delving into the "why's". ;-)

is it really that simple? france may not jump when we say so, but they have been our friends and allies - remember 1776, the statue of liberty, their response on 9/11 - no maybe not unquestioned obedience, but certainly a friend... and one who will tell a friend when they think we're not living up to our ideals!

makes you long for the days when people cared for people in danger, and acted to make a difference apparently heedless of the consequences.

wouldn't happen today - our corporations don't care and can't monetize it!!!!

... Did you ever notice the 26 states on the back of a $5 bill? And why there's only 26?

The reason that the five dollar bill only has 26 states appearing on it is because the pictures on it are flat images. The names of the states appear on the picture of the Lincoln Memorial that is on the bill and as only the front of the building is visible, only the states featured on that part of it are showing on the five dollar bill.
