to shoot good black n white pics does camera have to be set to mono ?

do i need to set my camera to mono ? or can i just change it in post ? will it make any difference to how well i can get my black and white pic if not set to mono and change it in Lightroom ?

My experience has been that shooting in color and changing to B&W during PP has a better result than shooting in mono & trying to "refine" in PP, but YMMV.

Same here. Seems to be better tonal qualities if shot in color...then convert.

Shoot in colour and convert in Lightroom and use the colour sliders to adjust, your results will be far superior to monochrome from your camera

EDIT: Better still, invest in NIK Silver Efex Pro.

Hi Graham, funny that you should chip in as its after seeing your fabulous mono of Hadrian's wall as inspired me to have a go at some black n whites and thank you for the answer to my question ! i will shoot in colour and convert in lightroom ! many thanks

not in a position to buy at the min but i am going to take note of your advice and go and have a look at the software now ! thank you Graham

You can get a 30 day trial...but just be prepared to buy it afterwards, as you won't want to edit without it anymore.
