There is an old aphorism (sorry, I can't remember the attribution) that states "that those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it".
George Santayana, philospher. Born Madrid, raised and lived in US, died Rome, Italy.

Re: First amendment, separation, etc etc etc.

"Congress shall make no law respecting the establishment of religion, nor prohibiting the free exercise thereof."

What that means, simply, is that the Federal Government can NOT align itself with ANY religion, good, bad or indifferent. And, I hate to break it to you, but using the word GOD in official documents, signs, seals, coins, oaths, and so on RESPECTS the ESTABLISHMENT of a religion. We all know that when you say "GOD", you speak of a Christian deity.

How would you good Christians feel if we added "In Allah We Trust" to all our coins? Or sang, "Buddha bless the USA!", or "Shiva and Vishnu Bless America" ???

The inclusion of the word "GOD" in official government stuff implies support of the Christian religion, to the exclusion of all others. That's simply not right.

As for the sales tax aspect, I was also a small retailer for 30 years. Sales tax is a consumption tax and therefore (except on necessities) a "progressive" tax. That is, it taxes items that you can afford to buy (the thinking goes) and if you cannot afford to buy, you should not buy. So the tax won't hurt you financially if you can afford the item. (I won't go into the psychology of overextended buying thanks to credit cards). An unprogressive tax, like one on food, taxes you regardless of ability to pay.

Actually, if I remember my college Econ classes, a sales tax is REGRESSIVE, in that for the same item, the tax is a higher percentage of income as you go down the income scale. In other words, a loaf of bread selling for $1.00, and taxed at, say 5% - that NICKEL means a lot more to someone making $10 an hour than it does to someone making $100 an hour. Thus, sales taxes are REGRESSIVE. This is why, in many jurisdictions that DO charge a sales tax, certain basic necessities like food and clothing are exempted. But then, this leads to very odd exemptions and exclusions - why is butter not taxed but margarine is? Why are noodles taxed but not spaghetti?. Why are clothes tax-free in this state, but not in that one?

INCOME taxes are PROGRESSIVE, if you are taxed at higher rates with higher incomes. This doesn't always work out, as per the loophole-ridden US tax code, but the idea was, the more you make, the more you pay, percentage-wise.

We have several members from the "far Northeast", as it's sometimes known. RiverNan is along the Delaware over there somewhere, but I forget if she's in Jersey or PA. There are also several of us from farther down the river, such as myself and a few from the northern Delaware area. Welcome.

1) Yes, raw images must be post-processed, at least in some small manner, to be converted to JPEG for printing and other use.
2) JPEGs produced in-camera contain not only 'your' inputs (via presets or camera tunings) but also the camera designer's inputs as to 'correct' color tones, balance, sharpness, etc etc. These may or may not be accurate or correct in YOUR mind's eye.
3) Using raw as an image source simply gives those who WISH to further process their images the raw material, so to speak, to do so.

It's like using a 96-crayon box versus a 16-crayon box to draw a picture. If what you want can be done in 16 colors, then JPEG is fine. If you need all 96, the only way to do that is with a raw source file.

As with MWAC and some others, I've been haunting the site since early September. It was a lot more fun when there were only a couple of hundred members, since posts and threads stayed current a lot longer. I've seen some users come and go, that's just something that always goes on at a place like this. There are troll post-baiters, one-hit wonders, deluded experts, shy newcomers and everything in between. I consider it a window on the world. :)

First, in regards to the unions, what are you talking about? All the Act says is that if you have private insurance nothing changes. That's it. I'm in a union, and nothing changes for me. No one is forcing anyone with insurance to change a thing. Another right wing lie.

As to the China thing. Everyone on the right screams about the debt and China. How may of you own your homes outright without have had a mortgage? How many of you bought your cars for cash? Borrowing in and of itself is not a bad thing. In fact, now is a GREAT time for the government to be borrowing money for stimulus since interest rates are almost zero. It's like free money.

And China actually holds very little of our debt as a percentage. I have to research it further, but the last time I looked China held less than 10% of our debt. I'll check it out later when I have more time. More right wing fear-mongering about the yellow hordes that are going to own this country - just like we said about the Japanese a few decades ago.

Where I live, the only large retailer of any size whatsoever (e.g., Parking for more than a dozen cars) is a standard Walmart. There are some other stores nearby in Pennsville or Salem, that sell similar items, but many of them close by 5 or 6 PM on days they are open. Salem County has the lowest population, the lowest population density, the lowest per capita income, and the highest unemployment rate in the state. The one small hardware store/lumber yard within 20 miles charges prices 40% to 60% higher than, for example, the Lowes or Home Depot stores across the river in Delaware. Can you blame people for using the local Walmart instead of the locally-owned, but high-priced, stores?

Using the BULB setting allows you to leave the shutter open for as long as you like. A remote (wired or wireless) shutter release makes it a lot easier than holding the button down on the camera for 15 minutes.. :)

I own the 50D and love it. Have found a 40D I am thinking about and was wondering how much difference there is between them.

From what I have been reading the 10 to 15 meg photo size doesn't make much difference in the photo quality, in fact, some reviews actually say the 40D is better. Even handles noise better.

Any thoughts?

Jim D

There are photog's on my forum that use the 40D and it takes marvelous images. In the hands of a good photographer. There are few substantive differences between the two cameras. The lower noise factor comes from having fewer pixels on the same size CMOS chip, thus decreasing electronic cross-over noise.

Just because we prefer to be accurate does not make us jerks. And whether or not this is a photography forum makes no difference. If it was a medical doctor's forum, and we were all surgeons or diagnosticians, would not you want things spelled correctly? Our attempts at correcting mistakes should not be seen as condescending. We just don't see why some people like being stupid on purpose.
