I also have a 50D and the Canon 100 mm macro. In looking at the photo of the ring you provided, I do not see anything in the the photo that is sharp. In my readings about sharpness of photos, the literature says that if nothing is sharp in the photo, then there must have been some camera motion. Check and see that everything is firmly locked down.
