Hi, this is my first post here. I am a jeweler and am trying to take very detailed photographs of my work using the Canon 50D. I dialed the camera in using the built-in digital magnification, which looks very sharp, but when I take the picture it's as if I enabled portrait mode, but I'm using standard mode. Can anyone here tell me what's going on given this limited note? I am 69 years old, I do hope to understand digital cameras eventually... :)

Hi Jefree:

I also have a 50D and the Canon 100 mm macro. In looking at the photo of the ring you provided, I do not see anything in the the photo that is sharp. In my readings about sharpness of photos, the literature says that if nothing is sharp in the photo, then there must have been some camera motion. Check and see that everything is firmly locked down. Hope this help with your question. Good luck!

I would like to suggest Butterfly Wonderland and Odyssey Aquarium both in Scottsdale, In Phoenix there is the Zoo and Botanical Gardens that have lots of photo opportunities. In Tucson there is the Pima Air Museum and their wild animal park (I forgot the name). All these are flat and easy walking or wheel chair accessible if you use one. Good luck with your visit.

How do I avoid constantly seeing this Elissa site every time I sign onto UHH? It is the first thing that comes up all the time. I just want to go to the sections and avoid this opening site. Thanks for the help

We rescued a large male cat, about 13 pounds, who looks similar. In our research we concluded ours was Norwegian Forest Cat. You might look up the breed and see if there is a similarity. It is not the one in my avatar. Good luck.

Occasionally I want to forward some joke or excellent bit of photo wisdom that appears on UHH. How do I do this? I am using an iMac with Mojave and Firefox. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

A couple of days ago I posted a question about the ID of a Hummer photo I had taken. I received several replies which I followed up on. I also sent the question, with the photo, to Cornell Ornithology and their response is shown below:

"Based on the white over the eye and the shape of the throat feathers, I believe that's a Lucifer Hummingbird! (https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Lucifer_Hummingbird/overview )"

Thanks again for all your inputs. UHH is truly a great resource!

Background. Shooting Nikon D810. Post processing with LR
I just shot about 120 pictures of a rental unit before renters move in. I shot in RAW and should have shot in jpeg. I’m going to put the pictures on a thumb drive for record keeping. What is the easiest way to now convert to JPEG for record keeping? I don’t want to do any post processing.

For sometime now I have been using the software called IJFR. This stands for "Instant JPEG From Raw". After it converts your photos it can put the JPEG in a new folder or just adjacent to the original RAW file or export the converted JPEGS.

You can do a search and try it out.

Good Luck!

Hi all:

I am needing to replace my 9 year old iMac 21.5 inch desktop computer. In looking at the specs on the Apple site I see options for Fusion drive or an SSD. Can you folks tell me the difference between the two types of drives and which one you would select for you new computer.

Thanks for forthcoming help.

Hi Big Jim:

If you will be doing lots of art photos, I suggest you find the book titled How to Photograph Works of Art by Sheldan Collins published by Amphoto Watson-Guptil in 1992. Although it deals with film most of the techniques apply in digital as well. It is probably out of print but should be available on the used book market or in a library. I used this book when I was photographing art work in years past.

Just my two cents worth. Good luck in your endeavors!

Thanks to all who replied to my Apple upgrade issue. There are some good suggestions that I will consider as I visit my local Apple stores.
