I like the first one too for the reason already mentioned about using a large aperture to single him out against the background.

one thing you should take into consideration is that 70-300mm lens is not a macro lens. I wouldn't expect anything taken close up to be very sharp.

if you're not using auto focus, and you're focusing manually, check the diopter on your view finder to make sure it's calibrated to your eye sight.
