I always have a shirt tail or sleeve or T-shirt or necktie available. Next time you're in a restaurant, stick a handful of napkins in your pocket.

Many of these, and especially the paper based napkins, can over time scratch the coating on lenses.

Have you ever noticed what your glasses look like after several cleanings?

I completely agree with the previous advice to use a lens cleaner, which is specifically designed for it purpose.

For over 12 years now, I've been uploading my "showable" photos to http://www.pbase.com/wjshaheen

It allows multiple galleries (albums/folders) and they each tell a story. I have a set of sub-galleries for astronomy projects and photos:
http://www.pbase.com/wjshaheen/astronomy

All-in-all, this is my photo journal/diary. It has accumulated nearly 1 million hits.

On my computer (PC), I have a 250gb SSD for recent work or things under development and a 1TB hard drive for archived photos/documents.
Everything is backed up to a 4TB HDD attached to the network. I also use BackBlaze for automatic cloud backups ( https://www.backblaze.com/ ).

I pretty much keep everything.

PS: I have a separate PC in the observatory (for astronomical imaging) and it has its own back-up hard-drive.
And, a laptop, which gets backed up to the network drive.

All local backups (i.e., non-BackBlaze) are handled by Norton's.

Other than ancient raw files, I keep everything and it is cataloged and indexed by ThumbsPlus (cerious.com).

Have you tried simply reformatting the card, from the camera menu?

If you're going to look at a photo cataloging database, you should take a look at ThumbsPlus from http://cerious.com/.

It goes beyond photos and I've used it for at least 10 years for every type of document imaginable.

Maybe try back button focusing, to avoid any hunting?

You have accidentally set a time delay on your shutter. If you don't now how to access this feature and correct, then the simple 2 Green Button reset will take you back to factory default settings.

That is a possibility. If so, the setting is "Exposure Delay". Comes in handy when you want to avoid vibrations at high magnification.

An alternative to using the DNG converter is to use either Nikon's ViewNX 2 (or Capture NX if you prefer), or Canon's DPP4 to do the conversion.

I routinely use ViewNX 2 to batch convert.

I just don't see the point of updating just to get the converter for a new camera.

FWIW Any software package running on a Mac can print to a PDF file - the converter is part of OS X. I think it is built into LINUX as well, if you are running Windows, well, you need a pdf printer driver like Cute PDF installed, unless W10 finally included a PDF printer in the OS.

Windows 10 does indeed now have "Microsoft Print to PDF" as a choice when printing. If you don't happen to have W10, I've used CutePDF for years.

I for one have decided to reserve judgement until Luminar 2018 arrives in a few days.

Just want to say thanks to PixelStan77 and Gene51 for their elaborate and thoughtful description of the benefits of using LR and its associated products.

WJShaheen, your site is quite nice. Apparently Flickr is not the only host that has a hierarchical setup. (I'm not planning to change over, though.) This is my high-level Flickr page: https://www.flickr.com/photos/8712554@N02/collections.

That's a nicely organized site, David. Thank you. Yes, you get to the point where it's pretty much impossible to convert.

I'd like to add to the mix PBase.com ( http://www.pbase.com/ ). I've been using it for over 10 years.
It's reasonably priced and they keep increasing the amount of storage you get for the price.
No ads. What I like in particular about the site is you can have hierarchies of "galleries" (albums) which contain individual photos or other galleries.
In addition, you can create virtual galleries which have copies of selections (does not add to the storage).
Here's my conglomeration: http://www.pbase.com/wjshaheen (I don't get any compensation for any hits.)

I installed both and now have access to both. There was no mention of doubling the price if you have both.

I would rather have LR Classic on my desktop and MacBook Pro. However, when packing carryon only for any trip and I take my iPad instead of my computer, it might be necessary to use LR CC while you’re away. Then when you are back home in front of your computer and open LR Classic, the changes from LR CC automatically sync. Anyway, that’s the way I see it

I have since found that when you choose Classic, you get both.

I am rowing upstream on this one. I purchased a stand alone LR6 and will use it until I decide something better is out there. I hate the idea of being held hostage to the monthly fee plan. I know it works for many, just not for me.

The way I see it, (on the point of obsolescence due to a new camera), you can always use the mfg's software to convert to TIFF, DNG, or whatever.
In the case of Canon, it's DPP4 (Digital Photo Professional 4); for Nikon it's ViewNx 2.

I think things have settled out enough that I'm going to try LR Classic, even though I have Affinity, Topaz Studio and Aurora HDR 2018.

PS: One of the best investments you can make as far as performance improvements in your desktop is to get a solid state drive.

You know I have been waiting for someone else to remember that. Since there are now two Lightrooms , does this mean they have effectively doubled the price of the subscription like Neflix did a couple of years ago?

No. As I see it, you would buy one or the other (Classic or the new version). No need for both. Again, as I see it.
