Hello everyone, I'm hoping to get into some DSLR photography a little more than in the past. I would like help in deciding which camera to get. I use to shot with a Canon AE1 for years, two years ago bought a Fiji FX33WP which I use for fly fishing because it's waterproof and does what I need it to do. I will be shooting different things, some close ups of insects and flies I tie, Grand daughter and grand son plus some wildlife shots. I've been looking at the Nikon and Canon cameras and have been leaning towards the Nikon D 3100 and D3200 with their 18-55 VR and the 70-200 VR. I also was thinking of getting one of these with an 18- 110 I think it was. I won't be enlarging the photos over 11x17 if that big. Most will be used on my angling website for insect identification. I know a true macro would probably be a better choice but want as much versatility as possible. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Your budget may make it tough to get the lens you may need for what you want to do. I suggest B&H, Adorama or Cameta Camera. If it's Nikon you prefer, B&H has some great Nikon Kit deals right now on new equipment with a USA warranty. Cameta Camera has a great selection of refurbished Nikon Cameras in some package deals. Opening your budget up by another $300-400 could get you a refurbished Nikon D3200 at Cameta ($299) and allow you to get a better lens, such as a Nikon 18-200mm with VR (+/-$596 new, USA warranty). Cameta gives 1 year warranty on their factory refurbished cameras. Good luck with your decision.

I own a T3i with several lenses and am looking for a good travel bridge camera. My search has been cut down to the Canon sx50 and the LUmix fz70 & lumix fz200. Has anyone heard if new Canon sx60 is ready for sale yet? I will use the camera for mostly landscapes and other travel shots. Is the 2.8 on the fz200 with shorter zoom better than the canon's longer zoom of 1200mm? I could use some guidance from the experts?

About six or seven years ago, I bought a Canon G9, and I have been very happy with the results. It is not a DSLR, but you can control it manually, or use auto, program, or other modes. There have since been numerous iterations of the camera, but for less than $500, it was worth picking up.

I'm looking for some input on batteries - is it safe to buy aftermarket replacement batteries in lieu of camera mfg brands? Is it safe to save a buck or will the price difference redeem itself with performance/longevity? Nikon is my brand if that makes any difference.

Amehta's point is very well noted. Why spend the kind of money we do on first class equipment and then save a few dollars on the battery? I too am in the market for a back up battery and for my D7000, it will be a Nikon battery.

Can I live with the 18-140 lens. It's such a big price jump to go to
the 18-200 . I shoot a lot of music performances but most of them are in fairly small venues. I appreciate the help.

Actually, right now B&H has the Nikon 18-200mm lens on sale for the same price, $596, as the 18-140mm lens. I ordered one today.

I wish to purchase a Nikon 55-300 lens. B&H, Adorama, Amazon have the lens for around $395.

There are distributors on Ebay listing the lens for around $235 to $249 to buy, not bid, a saving of around $160. These distributors list their names as tri-state1, getitdigital, photovideos4less. All state they have better than 99% costumer satisfaction. The prices and the 99% satisfaction is a strong indicators that these may be questionable distributors.

Does anyone have experience with these companies on Ebay? If so, your recommendation would be appreciated. If you have used the lens, and wish to comment, that will be appreciated as well.

Just a few thoughts. Is the lens being sold as new? If so, what type of warranty is being provided? If you are buying used, what assurances do you have on the condition of the lens? Usually, if the deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is. B&H, Adorama, Cameta Camera will all sell at the lowest fair trade price for a lens with a USA warranty if new, and if used, will give you a condition rating. Refurbished is also option, and Cameta Camera usually offers a one year warranty on their Nikon refurbished lenses. Lastly, you can always google the seller showing the name and customer complaints, and see if anything pops up. Also, using PayPal on eBay does give you some protections if you purchase there and are delivered considerably less than you thought you were paying for.

Good luck with whatever avenue you wish to pursue.

Thanks to everyone for their input. I really like the fact that this forum allows me to draw upon those far more experienced than I am. You have definitely confirmed what I was thinking, and I plan to order the Nikkor 18-200mm lens. The great news is that it is on sale now from all of the retailers I deal with so it fits my budget nicely.

You don't say what your budget is, but I would consider the 18-200mm f3.5-5.6g ed vr II.

My budget is about $600. This lens is on sale right now for about that amount. I have heard some say that the 18-140 mm range is a good choice as well. Too many choices out there, but I think I am leaning towards the 18-200 mm lens.

I am considering the purchase of the above lens to use as my everyday lens. I currently have a Nikkor 50mm f1.8 prime and a 55-200mm Nikon zoom. This would replace the 55-200mm zoom. As an alternative, I could keep the 55-200mm zoom and add a Nikkor 16-85mm f3.5-5.6 mid range zoom as an alternative. All are DX lenses. My camera is a Nikon D7000. I typically shoot family, grand children, their sports, vacations, and some street scenes. I would appreciate your thoughts.

You may want to use some video's or training manuals. Two which may help are:
Blue Crane Digital -Introduction to the Nikon D5100 instructional DVD at about $20-25 - you can get it from Best Buy on line.

Nikon D5100 for Dummies by Julie Adair King on Amazon for $18-20. The reviews say this is really excellent and not to be put off by the title.

Good luck with the D5100 and I hope all works out for you and you enjoy it.

Hi anyone ever deal with these people? They have a d5200 with 18-55 mm refurbished and a 55-300 refurbished lens. I do believe the camera is also refurbished. they are asking $899.95. any suggestions as to this being a good deal or should i not consider it? of course u get the tripod and sd card etc

If you are at all leery about refurbished (and dealing with a reputable camera retailer should diminish that), I was in Sam's Club the other day and they have a kit that includes a new Nikon D5200, the 18-55 mm and 55-200 mm VR lenses, with USA warranty and a San Disk SDHC memory card, Nikon Camera bag and WU-1a wireless adapter - all for $899. Just saying, as an option, and it's brand new.

I'm not sure what "grey goods" are. Could someone explain?

Grey Market refers to items sold without a USA warranty. Nikon will not repair these items if you attempt to turn them into them for repair work. Accordingly, they are usually priced less than items sold with a USA warranty. Most large retailers like B&H, Adorama, KEH, and Abe's sell both grey market, also called import, and USA items. It's best to ask when you are making the purchase.

I am looking to get a Nikon d7100 and noticed Abe's had a good price. Has anyone ever dealt with this company? Feedback??

I have done business with them in the past. Abe's usually advertises grey market or "import" pricing, so buyer beware. As I recall, they had mentioned this when you called to place the order, then offered to sell you a USA warranteed product, often times at a competitive rate with other products of like kind. They have been around for 30 or more years. I bought both of my Nikon film cameras from them. They did try to "upsell" me or push their in house brands but I declined all of their add-on's. I have not done business with them in about 10 years. For now, I'll stick to B&H, or Adorama, to avoid the sales push for stuff I do not need.
