I wish to purchase a Nikon 55-300 lens. B&H, Adorama, Amazon have the lens for around $395.

There are distributors on Ebay listing the lens for around $235 to $249 to buy, not bid, a saving of around $160. These distributors list their names as tri-state1, getitdigital, photovideos4less. All state they have better than 99% costumer satisfaction. The prices and the 99% satisfaction is a strong indicators that these may be questionable distributors.

Does anyone have experience with these companies on Ebay? If so, your recommendation would be appreciated. If you have used the lens, and wish to comment, that will be appreciated as well.

Which raised another question. Does Ebay police those which offer items through their website to the public?

Some disreputable dealers will post false feedback in order to look reputable. I've seen it with other no name dealers. I can't say that these particular ones do that, but I would be very wary.

Simple research brings this out, better consult the BBB for their track record...

Just an idea.

There's an old saying........"if a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is too good to be true." You'd likely be buying a lens that would not be covered under the manufacturer warranty, and as such, if something goes wrong, could be a nice paperweight, but not a good lens.

Buy from a reputable dealer and pay the price of admission to get a lens that Nikon will stand behind should you ever need Nikon to stand behind it.

I have this lens and love it. I use it several times and week
and find it clear and responsive. I got it from B&H but
I don't remember how much I paid. Good luck

Ebay's unstated mantra: Buyer beware. Really, really, we mean it.

Non-authorized dealers will buy a camera/lens combo from unauthorized sources and remove the lens, selling it at a lower price. You can save money and get the genuine article, but you won't get a warranty.

Check the seller ratings on ebay. I'd never buy from someone with a rating below 98%. Also check the number of sales. Both ebay and Amazon are plagued by sellers who sign on, try to pull a scam, and then leave and sign on with a new name.

I've never been stung on ebay.

The customers do the policing. Several members have posted that between ebay and PayPal, they got refunds after bad deals - but it can be a hassle.

The ratings mean nothing. I was scammed on Ebay (luckily it was only $80) by someone with 100% good rating. After some dectective work I learned he had set up his site at the beginning buying cheap trinkets and selling them for pennies to build up the rating. Then he moved into more expensive items selling at unheard of low prices. Of course, stupid people like me fell for them and never got the items. Ebay shut him down before I could file a claim. Once he was shut down they wouldn't do anything about getting my money back. I'm sure he just changed the name and started over.
