Hello;
My D90 LED failed a few months ago and I struggled with a decision regarding a 5300 or a 7100. I chose the 5300 because of the substantially less weight with the same picture quality. (The best camera is the one you carry with you.)

I have a 5 mo-old Nikon D5300 with also a new 80? - 300 zoom. The autofocus suddenly stopped functioning. Main batt is charged, and I removed and reinstalled the lens. Instruction book seems to be "quiet" on this. Any suggestions? Thanks. ~~~ Jim.

My experience has been the Canon is superior to the others. Epson is also ok, however keep hundreds of miles away from all HP products. Quality ok initially, but will not last very long due to sloppy assembly as well as extremely expensive ink.

Hello Photography Friends:
I have a new Nikon and for the first time have the ability to take RAW photos. However, I do not have a program on my computer to open and/ or print. What is out there that I can install. Thanks.

I recently purchased the newer version of the Nikkor 18-300 DX. It is 3/4 lb lighter and a full inch shorter than the older 18-300. Both are VR which is important to me. I decided I did not wish to keep changing lenses for a variety of shooting, so a diverse zoom was my choice. The lighter weight allows for keeping it on the camera at all times and for travel I therefore do not take my gadget case. My option was to get the older 18-300 for serious stuff and pair with the newer 18-55 VR for just travel which I believe is the smallest and lightest zoom Nikkor makes. Because I also have a Leica 15 pix "shirtpocket" (for dinner parties) as well as the Olympus "rough use" (for the beach, sailing, and sky diving), my final decision was for the newer 18-300 was the right way to go. After one week and about 350 images, I am extremely pleased. Some more professional photographers than I may not mind changing lenses frequently, so my decision may not be the way to go for everyone. By the way, I use it with a D 5300.

Hello Anand:
I really was not ready to "start over." My first DLSR was a D 50, then traded to a D 80 which "failed past repair" last month. So getting a new D 5300 earlier this month precipitated some new thoughts/ ideas. The "kit" was from Houston Camera Exchange, a very large retail/ wholesale outlet with every camera brand. I consigned virtually all of my slide cameras (2 FTN's, a Nikonos, and a Leica 4) and lenses in 2008 for my first DSLR. I have a Leica-C Lux 3, 12.5 pix "shirtpocket" that I take to dinner parties. For road racing, sailing, ocean cruises, fishing, hunting, and vacations in general, I like something more serious; however maybe the FX is more than I need. My major issue at this point is deciding whether my 2 FX lenses are wasted on a DX body. Your comments are very kind thanks.

The Nikon School was very valuable ancillary knowledge back in my early photography days when I also had college credit courses in photography. Sure, it is intended primarily for amateurs. I think that is where we all first started. ~~~ Jim.

Thanks for your encouraging comment and the welcome note. Based on valuable comments from good people, I will be selling / trading 2 of my 3 lenses and buying two new ones for a total of four, all zoom DX.

Thanks. You have been very helpful. I will look into the 10-24 wide zoom and consider trading the 24-120 FX for something DX in that range. It seems I wasted $'s on the FX when it was packaged incorrectly with the D80.

To Bram:
You seemed sarcastic and insulting.
As for my expertise, I have been shooting slides (about 45,000) since my first Nikon FTN in 1968. I recently sold on consignment four camera bodies and eleven non-digital lenses. I have attended the Nikon School of Photography three times (however not yet digital). My question on this site was precipitated by conflicting and inconsistent information from photography store clerks; I thought this would be a friendly professional forum to get the correct information. Your answer is that I am probably wasting $'s with my FX lens on a D 5300. That lens was part of a kit package with a D 80 (DX) six years ago; according to you seems that was not such a good "deal" if not properly matched as you imply.

I have a six yr old Nikon D 80 with a failed rear LED screen, otherwise the camera is perfect. Since it is not in working order, it is not tradeable at my local camera store. Is it worthwhile fixable? I just purchased a new D 5300 so I would sell this highly discounted. Thanks.

I need a little explanation of the differences between these two Nikon lens formats. The FX is much more expensive so it must do something that maybe I need, or maybe not. I have a 24-120 FX VR (portrait zoom) and a 70-300 DX VR (tele zoom) paired with a 1 week old D 5300. Am considering a wide zoom such as the 16-35 FX VR and wonder if I need to spend the extra $'s or just go with a DX. My expertise level is advanced amateur. Thanks in advance for your comments.
