There's no EXIF in the file. There's no way to say. At f/2, it's not like the aperture was 'left open' between frames. So, it would seem the shutter was left open longer. That exposure duration might show in the EXIF, if there was any EXIF in these examples to review ....

I didn't export the EXIF, but the settings were the same as I mentioned in my OP. Nothing changed in my settings.

What metering?
If it's spot, did the first shot meter the wall and the second meter the horse?

That's an excellent question. I was using Evaluative metering (I'e updated my original post to reflect same).

We went to the State Fair rodeo yesterday. I was using my R5 with the EF 135 f/2 at f/2.0. For these two images, the ISO = 400, f/2.0 and shutter speed 1/200. NOTE: I was using Evaluative metering. Setting aside that the shutter speed was too low (I upped the ISO & shutter speed later), but just looking at these two images, any idea why the second image looks blown out?

The histogram is shifted well to the right and there its a spike up against the highlights. This was the sixth in about a 30 shot set using servo and High Speed (mechanical) shutter. Exposure on all the other images looked normal. I don’t think there was any change in the lighting nor anyone near with flash.

Just wondering if anyone has any idea what happened here? (The settings were exactly the same for all the shots in this series).

Same settings but way over exposed.

I have the R5 and Electronic 1st curtain. I don’t use electronic because I need the sound confirmation. It does seem quieter than mechanical. I shoot birds so rolling shutter is keeping me from electronic.

For some reason EFC on my R5 is slightly louder than mechanical. (See my dB meter test above). My old ears could not tell the difference

Here is the best explanation I've found.

Personally, I can't tell the difference in sound between mechanical and Electronic 1st curtain. The shutter sound of the R5 is not that loud and doesn't bother me.

My old ears can't tell the difference between the two either. See my experiment above where I found that mechanical shutter was actually slightly quieter than EFC (not what I expected).

Very interesting. Are there any cons for EFS?

From watching the video I posted earlier, with Rudy W, there don't seem to be many cons to using Elec. First Curtain. I think I'm going to give it a try.

Just for fun, I tested Mechanical vs Elec. 1st Curtain on my R5 and the difference in shutter sound surprised me. In fact, I tested the shutter sound with a DB meter and the results were not what I expected. If you can believe these charts the mechanical shutter (at least on my R5) was actually slightly quieter than elect. 1st curtain. This surprised me because even Rudy Winston, in the video I posted, suggested the Elct. 1st Curtail would be slightly quieter.

I tried this test a few times with same result. The first image shows the setup. I located the mic on my iPhone just under the lens, near the camera base (close to where the shutter is located). As you can see from the 2nd and 3rd images, the shutter sound for the mechanical shutter was slightly quieter than Elec. 1st Curtain. Note: I'm calling the lines above each number on the chart the corresponding dB level. Not sure if that's correct, but for comparison is doesn't matter as the difference in dB is relative.

Mechanical Shutter: First = 72dB, Second = 70dB, third actuation = 65dB

Electronic First Curtain: First = 75dB, Second = 73dB, third actuation = (about) 66dB

The Canon R5, and likely other of the R series, has 3 shutter modes: mechanical, electronic 1st curtain and all electronic. My question is what is the purpose of the electronic 1st curtain and does anyone use it?

You might find this instructive.

Note, when I tested Mechanical vs Elec. 1st Curtain on my R5 the difference in shutter sound was very slight.

Not a place for amateurs to wander. Sounds like you had thought about it before hand.

Indeed I did. Hope to go out again, but probably not this year.

Moral Addenda: Don't go when it is really hot, take lots of water, have a good Bisti map and a targeted plan. Not a place to wander aimlessly. And the best suggestion: Find a Navajo Guide. There are no signs, no trails.

Agreed. We didn’t, we did, we did (including AllTrails), we did, we didn’t. You’re right about no signs and no trails.

Why so many flat tires? What was the cause of them? Nails…or sharp rocks?

I think my flat tire was caused when I ran over probably a screw because it was a nice, small puncture and I could see the indentation of what was probably the head of a screw in the tread. Fortunately that tire was repairable. Then other fellow's flat tires were not nice small punctures, but look more like he may have hit some sharp rocks too hard. Neither of his tires were repairable and he had to buy two new tires.

Moral: If you go to this area, drive slow over the rocky roads there.

UPDATE: I can’t believe it, but they had the award ceremony today and one of my images, (L6 in my initial post) won first place in the Adult Amateur-Scenic category. First time ever entering a contest and can’t believe I actually won!
