Ditto sketch - that being said I have nikon but was to start over would switch to canon. At the high end both excellent bodies and lenses. However at the mid and lower level I believe canon better. Happy New to all.

If it comes with a good lens It would be the one to get instead of the 7000

John is right - if you can afford it always get the better glass - not saying the 55-300 is as good as the 70-300. But in it's price range the 55-300 is a good buy. Frankly if I was going to Africa I would do everything i could to get an f4 or 2.8 prime lens even if it meant renting one.

Thanks for the information - is a big help. As an aside I think that the kit lens with both nikon and canon are not very good unless you buy the more expensive bodies - use to be you could get a decent lens for a reasonable price but don't think that is now the case. That is why I am going to get the sigma - first time in 35 years I will be buying something other than nikon.

Erv well said - if it was my choice I would also consider what I will be shooting after the trip. My experience is when on a trip I will use a wide lens much more thAn a zoom. She might be better off going for a two lens combination instead of one.

Good question - the 70-300 will focus faster but not sure if any difference in shutter speed. Doubt it.

Another way to explain - the sensor on your 7000 is smaller than a full frame sensor therefore only a portion of the image traveling through the FF lens is recorded by the smaller sensor. In reality the image is being cropped and made to appear closer not being drawn closer as would occur if you put a 450mm FF lens on a FF camera.

Yes you need a full frame camera to get full use of a FF lens. As said above a FF lens on a 7000 has a crop factorwhich is 1.6 for nikon. This means a 70 to 300 FF on your 7000 essentually becomes a 105 to 450
