I'm just curious to see which brand of cameras is the most preferred between Canons and Nikons and which models you have/your favorite lenses with these cameras.
And a quick hello as I'm new to this form... Hiya!

Welcome to the forum! I'm glad I'm your first responder.

This discussion will go on almost forever, so let my put in my two cents.

It doesn't matter. Both companies make excellent products that take excellent photos. Go to a camera store and examine them in person, then decide what you want.

Once you start buying lenses, you will be pretty much locked into that brand. I started with Nikon years ago, so I buy Nikon. I could be just as happy with a Canon.

I'm sure others will give you more detailed answers.

Bottom line: buy what feels good to you.

Some people prefer Nikon and some Canon (and some Sony, etc, etc). I think if you would do a quick search you will find that this is probably the most often beat to death question that get's posted. As for lenses, it really depends on what your going to shoot.

Welcome to UHH.

I agree buy what feels good in your hands... they are both excellent cameras and both have great glass to add.

My first SLR was a yashica tl electro. I moved to a Canon AE1 and been with Canon ever since I now have a canon 40d and a T3. Both company's make Excellent camera and both produce great shots. Its all in what you want and what feels good to you.

As a retired engineer, I can't help myself...I look at the technical aspects, and at the history. Nikon was the top dog for so long that they didn't know what to do when Canon slid past them...and they have been playing "catch-up" ever sense. Their holding onto the CCD sensor killed them. Switching to CMOS in their new cameras has improved their performance considerably...but they are several years behind.
Like they say in their advertisement...compare the number of "white" lenses on the sidelines at any professional sports event.

Ditto - I have used Canon and Nikon. For recreational / hobby I would be happy with either. I started with Nikon D40 - D60 - D90 and now D7000.

I am currently an engineer for Christie Digital & I worked for Disney & Universal Studios in projection / special effects/Video (25) years - I shoot with Nikon. I don't shoot sports - so it doesn't matter much to me what is on the sidelines. You like Canon - that is ok with me. Stick with what you like. Happy shooting to everyone.

Nikon or Canon? Ford or Chevy? same question. both will take excellent photos, and if you shoot the same subject with a Nikon, and then again with a Canon, and have the two photos printed, no one will be able to tell by looking at the prints which camera took which shot. you'll get more variation in image quality between lenses, and more variation in print quality between printers, than you will in the output of those two cameras. it's all about what feels good to you, what you find easiest to use.

i shoot Canon, not because i had any axe to grind one way or the other when i got my first DSLR. i could've picked either one, but i chose Canon because at that time, they had better image quality than Nikon, though not by a lot. Nikon has pretty much closed the gap, but now they're both at the point where you can't tell the difference between 'em outside of an optical lab, so it really doesn't matter which brand you choose.

Hello and welcome to this UHH site. We are all very interested in photography.
I can you with 100% certainty that most cameras on the market today are good and are similar unless you are investing a lot of money into high end equiptment. It is your knowledge of what to shoot and how and when to look at things around you. Your knowledge of lighting will be very helpful so study and practice in all differnet times of day with different settings on your camera. Sit down and read your camera manual cover to cover then go out there and experiemnt with different ways to shoot the same subject. You will be amazed at the results.
Remember YOU are seeing the pictrure, the camera is only recording what you see. You ultimately make the decision what to shoot.

Ditto sketch - that being said I have nikon but was to start over would switch to canon. At the high end both excellent bodies and lenses. However at the mid and lower level I believe canon better. Happy New to all.

I use a Nikon D5000 and am happy with it. I liked the way it felt and I chose it over a D90 because of the weight. Once you start putting on lens and Speed Light, cameras get heavy fast. This was of concern to me because I am a retired female teacher and some cameras felt too heavy for me. It all depends on what is important to you! Both Canon and Nikon make excellent cameras. Hope this helps.
