Actually, the wimpy gas tax is no incentive for fuel efficiency. Gas tax should have been a percentage, not a fixed amount, Then it would be several dollars, and there would be demand for fuel efficient cars and we wouldn't need the now abandoned fleet mileage requirement. And there would be money for infrastructure upkeep (which is not being covered by the existing tax).
An added benefit would be people would be incentivized to live closer to work, cutting commuter mileage and reducing traffic congestion.
As it is, where I live, you have a couple of hours in the day when you can reasonably get somewhere. All other times, the roads are jammed with people trying to get to work. I don't work, and I resent those yahoos that can't live near their job.

Is this a joke? You come across as an idiot. Apparently an unemployed idiot. You think everybody can "live closer to work"? Have you ever lived in the real world where you have established roots. You've invested in a home, invested in improvements, have kids established in schools and sports or artistic programs, and maybe you are happy there. So you decide to change jobs to move upwards. Well to not inconvenience unemployed jcboy making his trip to the Dunkin Donuts three times a day you should sell your house and uproot your family. What a liberal idiot. So typical. Now I know why I've ignored The Attic for a few weeks.
