This was somewhat similar to my own edit of this image.

I posted something different in response to jaymatt's comment in the last MIYV. I do agree that a little variety is a welcome change.

This image is a view of the Griffith Observatory and downtown LA from the Griffith Park hills. The image is a raw SOOC converted to a jpg, no editing. I've also included a 16-bit png for those that want a little more editing latitude. Hope you have fun with this image.

Feel free to download this image to your computer. Then you can edit it any way that you think is an improvement. Composites, black and white conversions, textures, sky swaps, inverted images, solarization, or whatever else you think will improve the photo are acceptable techniques for your edit. When you are finished, post your edit in this thread. Edits will be accepted until 9pm Eastern time on Thursday. No edits will be accepted after that time because we will begin voting then. Thank you for your efforts and your participation.

I agree, you got a better result. I think I picked up some reminders on steps I need to take by watching that video. I don't use PS at present. I may in the future.

Thanks again for your interest and comments. Much appreciated Mike!

I hope that I didn't mislead you into thinking that PS was the answer. You can get exactly the same results using Snapseed but it requires just a little more work. In this image, because there were only two images, the ball resizing is a necessary step not obvious in the videos, which can easily be done in Snapseed.

Have fun with your exploration

I have several shots of this scene and I have one that I really like in color and landscape orientation. What I can't decide is if this works in black and white. I will look at it one time and think yes and again and think know. Please let me know what you think. And, if you are feeling real generous with your comments you can share with me why you think whatever you do about the photo.
TIA

I'm familiar with this location and I like the B&W version much better. The color doesn't add much to this image but the B&W version emphasizes the foreground textures and the background structures.

Well done!

Thanks for looking and for your comment! Much appreciated. They are quite similar, though the crystal ball in the first is a bit sharper than in the third, but not as sharp as it is in the second. At least to my eyes, it seems that way.

I pulled your images into PS and did see a marginal improvement, but not very much compared to what I was expecting. Personally, I would not be happy with the final result.

I also use Snapseed for some of my iphone images, especially if I'm sending to family or friends right away. However, I never used the Double Exposure feature. So I watched the video that Fstop referred to and a couple of others. Using Snapseed's DE feature appears to be a very manual process, more focus blending than focus stacking because you create the masks manually. PS, however, creates the masks automatically. But it is possible using Snapseed and I learned something new.

In your example, in addition to overlaying the focused ball, it must also be resized to cover the fully blurred ball in the focused background image. Otherwise you end up with a blur halo around the focused ball. The process is the same whether using PS or Snapseed. The image below is what's possible whether using PS or Snapseed.

In addition to missing the 'selective editing' step, there is a 'ball resizing' step also.

BTW, even PS did a poor job of focus stacking these images automatically.

That's cheap compared to SoCal. The fuel down here is a boutique fuel so we get raped compared to the rest of the country.

I feel sorry for them!

me too, but they prefer that over traffic driving into an office, especially LA traffic.

I'm thinking about getting a new iMac. Does anyone have experience with the M1 chip and Lightroom/Photoshop? I ask because it seems that Zoom and the M1 chip aren't completely compatible. Thanks for sharing any experiences.

Zoom not completely compatible with the M1 chip??? I use Zoom on an M2 MBP and have never had a problem with it. I also use PS/LR on the same computer and have had less problems than when I used PS/LR on my Intel based MBP. The only thing you need to watch out for is whether the plug-ins have been updated. I use Skylum's Aurora which hasn't been updated. But I can run PS under Rosetta and it works fine then. The reduction in performance is not noticeable.

My son and his wife work in the tech industry and, both, work from home. They're on Zoom at least 4 hrs/day and much of the time even longer. They use M1 Macbook Air's. I just called them as asked if they've had any problems with Zoom. Their answer was "No".

Hope this helps

Who are you?

Nice capture, especially with your cellphone. Well done!

I have a couple of suggestions for your consideration.

1) The owl, which is the subject, is dark compared to the rest of the scene. This de-emphasizes the subject. Looking at just luminosity, the owl doesn't appear to match the luminance of the rest of the image. Selecting the owl and increasing its midtones to match the owl's luminosity to the rest of the image creates a more balanced exposure. The image luminance is shown in row 1 and the resulting image is shown in row 2.

2) Removing the branch that is going across the owl's chest would better highlight the owl.

Beautiful image. Your blessed with those beautiful sunrises. We're currently in our June Gloom season where the skies are overcast most of the day.
