Coyote for sure, we have way too many of them here along the western Florida panhandle.

Once I got used to it, I love it. No issues at all.

The current version of Luminar may have preceded the release of the Canon R mirrorless full frame camera. Luminar will catch up to that as soon as possible, but not immediately. Meanwhile there should be software that came with your camera that will open the files and allow transfer to Lightroom.

Thanks! Lightroom reads them just fine but I was hoping to get away from the Adobe subscription trap and that's one reason I bought Luminar. I guess I'll be keeping LR for a bit longer.

I kinda hate to keep asking about Luminar but, has anyone else had a problem with Luminar not reading the .cr3 files?

Thanks!

RAW files cannot be viewed in Windows Explorer or Picture Viewer, unless you install a codec. I use FastPictureViewer codec in my computers and it works well on all RAW that I've tried (as well as some other file types that Windows cannot normally view). It only costs $10, provides thumbnails in the various sizes in Explorer and allows enlargement of images in Picture Viewer (and some other Windows media viewers). The enlarged images are "unprocessed" RAW, so they look low contrast and have somewhat desaturated colors in Windows Picture Viewer (and probably any other Windows media viewers).

I don't know if FastPictureViewer will work with the new Canon .CR3 files. That's a more major change than usual. FastPictureViewr might need to be updated to handle CR3 and doesn't appear that's been done yet. But I've used it with RAW from a wide variety of cameras, old and newer: Canon, Nikon, Oly, Pentax and more. It also will show TIFFs and PSDs, although larger files might take longer to generate a thumbnail.

AFAIK, there are only two cameras producing CR3 files so far: EOS R & M50. They are Digic 8 processor cameras and one of the differences is the new format includes an option to use a compressed RAW that's 30 or 40% smaller than standard RAW.

More info about CR3 here: https://www.dpreview.com/articles/0483301097/quick-look-canons-new-compressed-raw-format

FastPictureViewer codec available here: https://www.fastpictureviewer.com/codecs/

I downloaded it and tried it, it doesn't work either. I was able to download the Canon Digital photo Display and that opened them just fine.

Thanks for the help.

I agree but with the caveat that if it for actual photojournalism nothing should be added, subtracted or manipulated. If I'm not mistaken there have been prominent photojournalists fired for even minor alterations.

I just got off of the phone with Canon and they are sending me a link to download what I need. Thanks for the information, I appreciate the feedback. I'll post what I find out and how it works. By the way, no disc came with the camera.

Every new camera has a new RAW recipe. Your file viewer has to be newer than you new camera. The Lightrooms have only been able to see the EOS R version of .CR3 files for a week or two.

Why are you not using Lightroom to copy the files from card to computer and put them into your groups in one process?

Even when I copy the file from LR to my external hard drive, the computer will not open it to allow me to view the image. I need to view it in Lightroom.

Does anyone know of a photo viewer that reads cr3 files, or is it operator error with my Canon EOS R? They are fine in Lighthroom but I can't get my computer photo viewer to see them. I like to download them from my sd card to an external hard drive and then import them into LR as separate groups. I'm using windows 10.

I read somewhere, might have been here on UHH, that the option to import from Lightroom isn't available yet but is in the works for a future upgrade.

I went home and uninstalled Luminar 2018 hoping for a fix, no dice so I reinstalled 2018 while keeping Luminar 3, I activated the lightroom plughin, opened LR, went to the manager and saw the plugin was activated. I opened a photo right clicked and to edit in Luminar 3 with LR adjustments and it went to Luminar and I made some adjustments just to see and then hit apply. The photo was sent to my pictures folder and not back to LR. Oh well, at least I found it this time....Not too thrilled...

I installed it with no problem and exported a photo from LR to process some more but when I finished with it and tried to apply and return it to LR, it never showed up. The image went somewhere but I have no idea where.

Nice composition and exposure work! Yes, it's a bit of a common theme, but guess what? There's not another shot like this to be found. This one is unique in its own way and it's yours to enjoy, show off, hang on a wall, or whatever.

I went out last night hoping that the clouds would break up but it never really happened however, I did manage to get this shot of the dock.
