any help please.

I'm right with you. Layers and masks are apparently two essential features of PS, but I know very little about them. I have lots of resources to learn about these things, but I just haven't gotten around to doing it yet.

Well here is one way I like to use layers. In this image I created a duplicate layer then moved that layer to the top. Next I changed that new layer to black and white. Next, working on the black and white layer, I used the background eraser tool on the eye and bills of the birds this let the red color show through. There are other ways to do this but this is the one I chose

Think about what features you want. Then buy the camera that has those + some you did not think about. It is a tool and like all tools each has a different purpose. If it does not have the features you desire don't sell yourself short. Wait and either save more money or until it goes on sale. If you buy something cheap you will only regret it then sell it at a loss and then buy what you wanted in the first place.

I have a Toshiba Thrive and I love it. It has the android operating system like a lot of smart phones and a slot for the scandisk card from my camera. Lots of features for under $400

Went to Sylvan Waterfowl park in Scotland Neck NC with my club last weekend. Typically we go there about 3 to 4 times a year. This time I took my Sony A65 and shot in aperture priority, center auto focus, and spot metering. I think this setting really opens up the camera's lens and provides easy depth of field manipulation. Comments please.

very nice post, wish I could do as good

Easy to get good shots there the birds do all the work I took about 500 or so and about 15 were keepers. Thanks

I am a big fan of black and white if you are not find an old copy of life or look magazine and look at their photos. These days if you had some b&w film to get processed at the local drug store they would process it by desaturating the RGB! Nasty it leaves a blue tint. I like using Photoshop Elements it has a great converter as does Photomatix for processing single images. I have attached both a color and B&W image using elements 11

Well here is a technique that works for me (mostly) My camera also only takes brackets of 3. First always use apature priority as dof must be constant. If doing hand held select center focus then pick a spot in the scene that you can easliy remember as the focus point. Take a series of 3, adjust your exposure -2 ev, repeat, then adjust exposure to +2ev from the orig take another series making sure to return to the same focus point. Your HDR software should be able to remove any minor ghosting. My avitar is a picture I took that way

OK here is my 2 cents. I took the 4 images into photomatix selected tone mapping, default and only adjustment was took black point to 25.
