Why is there such a great fear of using adapters when going to mirrorless?
Most everyone here say that lenses are "Forever" and the body can be changed out preferably.
Yet there is a desperate need to change all lenses out because of the fear of using an adapter on perfectly fine lenses. Perhaps a pixel peeper can see the difference between a mirrorless lens and a non-mirrorless lens.
I have found absolutely no issue using an adapter as it just stays on the camera. Also there is no burning desire to swap awesome lenses for other more expensive lenses just because the new camera is mirrorless.

I certainly don’t fear using an adapter. I do have a few RF lenses, but I also have several EF mount lenses that I probably will keep, such as: 50mm f/1.4, 135mm f/2, 300mm f/4, 14mm f/2.8 and a Sigma 150-600mm.

I do have several RF lenses as I like to hike and these general purpose lenses are lighter and easier to carry.

As a matter of fact I also have several old FD lenses that I use with a FD-RF adapter. These are all manual focus, but with focus peaking they work pretty well.

You're inspiring me, though I have a lot more distance to travel.

Do you have any family or friends who might live along the path?

I just ordered a Thousand Oaks slip on solar filter for my 150-600 Sigma sports lens, so I can practice for the Apr. 2024 eclipse, which will be viewable from my back yard, but with a short drive 80-100 miles I can be close to the center of the path.
Since this will possibly be the last time in my life I will get to see/photograph a total eclipse of the sun I'm going for it.
I bought the slip on because making your own and getting it attached is a PITA!!! and at this time I can afford it, Just a few pennies less than $80

Good luck with it! This will be my wife’s and my third total Eclipse witnessed in our lifetime. The first was in Feb 1979 when I was stationed at Malmstrom AFB in Great Falls, MT. The path of totality briefly dipped down into NW US before arching back up into Canada. By pure luck, the path of totality came right through Great Falls so that all we had to do was step outside to see it (with proper eye protection). The second was in 2017. For that one we traveled to Glen Rock, WY and stayed on a family friend’s ranch.

I did photograph this one and it came out really well. My advice: watch as many how-to YouTube videos as you can!

PS: After I posted this reply, and mentioned I was once stationed in Great Falls, I suddenly see an advertisement on this site for a car dealership in Great Falls. Coinky Dink? I think not.

Luckily for me, the path center will go right over my house. I plane to align my iOptron tracker with true north the night before. Then hopefully, with the tracker set to track the Sun, I’ll be able to take pictures of several phases to compile later and won’t need to keep moving my camera to keep it centered.

I’ve shot a total eclipse before but never an annular.

I recently (few months ago) bought this Heidi travel tripod when it was a kickstarter program. It turned out to be everything they promised and then some. It’s an amazing little gem of a tripod. It’s no longer a kickstarter but available via their web site (link below).

Basil, literally, just did this exact pass. After 6 days moving up from Ghost Ranch \ NM (too early for the Aspen), Sept 29 \ Oct 4 was Durango to Silverton to Ouray to Ridgeway to Telluride to Ophir to Durango. Slight variations of Sliverton to Alpine Pass and off roading between Ridgeway and Telluride. My mission was to capture the Aspen brilliant yellow and the rare time when red color starts to appear. It was a success. The trees started changing in route to Silverton. Go through Silverton (great BBQ at Thee Pit) to the East a little distance.

The Million Dollar Highway next, worth it, plan a lot of stop, take images and start time. I really liked Ouray, great grocery store (only one) and plan to refuel in Ridgeway.

When you go to Ridgeway, go up Hwy 17, it runs parallel to the major road. When you are in Ridgeway, seek out John Wayne's restaurant. I had a lot of fun in this area. Send me a private message and I will find a 4-wheel rental company map showing where to go and not go a friend gave me.

Telluride is great with a lot of shots taken in and around the city. Here you get the Aspen all in yellow surrounded by beautiful pines. Ophir was the end of the shoot. It also begged the question, was I here to shoot or 4-wheel, with that, Durango then to Las Cruces where I suffered total brake failure. It appears my customized FJ Cruiser with armor plating does not include brake line connection protection.

Hope this helps, Cliff

Yeah, that sounds pretty much like the trek I'm hoping to do (except for the Ophir part, if roads are as bad as you say). I actually did this same trip last year around this same time. The colors were spectacular and I'm hopeful they are not too much past peak for this trip. According to an online foliage estimator map, the colors should be at or near peak for a lot of the area, but maybe a little past peak in the areas from Durango to Silverton. Fingers crossed.

I'm sorry to hear about your brake failure - that could have been a disaster - glad you're still around to post about it!

My car is a Kia Telluride (appropriate for where I'm going, eh?). It has AWD capability and does pretty good in semi-rough roads, but it's not what you'd call an "off-road" vehicle. It's certainly not going to keep up with a jeep. So let me ask you about the Ophir pass road. You indicated there were some pretty rough parts. If you did the entire stretch from Colorado highway 145, to Ophir, then to US 550 (million dollar highway). Where was the "bad" part? Was it from the stretch from Telluride (145) to Ophir, or was it the stretch between Ophir and US 550? I guess specifically I'm wondering how the stretch east of Ophir (from 550 to Ophir) was? We would be coming up 550 from Durango to Silverton, and if the stretch from there to Ophir wasn't too bad, I might want to take that pass to Ophir, but then turn around and go back to 550.

Fingers crossed. If Sigma does start selling RF lenses, I'd like to get my hands on an updated RF mount version of my EF 150-600. That's a great lens already on my R5, but it would be great to have one with snappier AF on an RF mount where I don't need to use the adaptor. I would also love to see their version of an ultra wide Zoom lens, like 14-35 or 15-45 f2.8. I already have a Canon EF 50 f/1.4 and the RF85 f/2 but it would be interesting to see Sigma's version of those focal lengths. Might also be nice to see their version of an RF 135.

Ophir Pass, a few miles north of Silverton on Hwy.550. Last Dollar Rd from Telluride to Ridgway. Owl Creek Pass by Delta. Molas Lake on Hwy 550 just south of Silverton.

Thanks - Did a little research on Last Dollar Road. Will probably do that, but from Ridgeway to Telluride. Molas lake looks very doable. Owl Creek Pass might be a bit too far off our planned trek, but we'll see.

I am planning a few days drive long the “million dollar highway” (US 550) soon to photograph fall colors. I’ve been on this highway before so know that there are many scenic pullouts. We will be going from (start) Durango - Silverton - Ouray - Ridgeway, then CO62 to Telluride. Probably will make a big loop and come back to Durango via CO 145, then CO 145 to Dolores, then 184/ 160 back to Durango.

Question for anyone very familiar with this area - are there any recommendations for places to visit with beautiful scenes that are off the path (a little) from these main roads? I will have an all-wheel drive Telluride, but it’s not super high, and is ok on dirt/gravel roads but not good for serious off road trails (It's not a jeep).

LADIES AND GENTS, I THINK WE CAN STOP ANSWERING THIS THREAD NOW. It has long ago been concluded that there was a brief increase in stadium lighting, exact source unknown but that’s what I’ve concluded (with input from hogs).
