Thoughts appreciated.

Willie

Was there last year and I think you captured it quite well in #2.

Do all the heads fit every camera or do they require a special mounting bracket?

I use a ball head with a quick release plate with my D7100 and the tripod. The tripod model I purchased is probably more than you need or want. I wanted a large heavy one without a center column because I would be shooting in industrial areas with vibration in the concrete floors.

Do you think I could find something steady and strong but still lightweight enough to backpack around for under $500.00?

Camera Cottage has a large selection of good used tripods also.

Yes that should not be a issue.

Can anyone recommend a good lightweight tripod that is sturdy enough to hold a d90 with 70-300mm lens. I have a cheap tripod and like you said, it is not worth buying cheap.

I purchased a Nest tripod. Take a look at them and see if they fit your needs. I bought it from Carters Camera Cottage.

Almost all photographers spend a lot of money on tripods. Many spend it once and use it for decades. Many others spend it every couple of years trying to "get by" for less money.
Best sound advice is to save your nickels until you can get a good tripod thatyou can grow into, rather than grow out of.

MT is right!
I spent $200.00 when I purchased my camera thinking it would be fine. That was back in April and I just took delivery of what I should purchased in the first place.

I have used the Plustek OpticFilm 7200i for several years with very satisfactory results. I understand there may be some faster scanners available. That would be a big plus if you have -- as I do -- thousands of slides to digitize. Plustek has several other models in the OpticFilm series. I would recommend a model that includes IR scratch and dust removal to eliminate at least some post-processing work. The attached photo was scanned from a slide shot in 1981. You can judge the quality for yourself.

I also have the Plustek OpticFilm 7200i and love it. The down side is that it is more than the OP's budget. It was more than my projected budget also, but after a couple martinis the numbers were a blur and I ordered it from B&H.

If you were in the market for a Nikon D5300 or D7100 would you buy this? http://www.nikondeal.com/hot-deal-nikon-d7100-w-18-55mm-ii-lens-for-879/

I would shy away from it. Every time it seems to be to good compared to legit dealers it ends up being a scam. With Nikon's pricing policy all authorized retailers are going to be close in their prices. I personally would pass on that deal.

The top image reminds me of the line, "That's a great picture. You must have an expensive camera." Each hair on the woman's head is sharp!

As for the infinity, or distant, focus, have you tried checking the focus of your camera/lens combo?

Thanks Jerry just what I was looking for. The Eye Doc is polishing me a new set of Coke bottle lenses, soon I will able to see what I am shooting.

No film as close as I ever got was a Brownie for film and a point & shoot digital I bought years ago for use at work. My hobby was muscle cars but due to a life/death experience 2 years ago I can no longer work on the cars. I thought I would give this a shot for a new hobby.

Are you saying that you HAVE all of the lenses listed in the first post?

You have everything you need for any situation..no need to buy anything.

I'd bring these three

3. AF-S 35mm f/1.8G DX
4. AF-S 50mm f/1.8G
5. AF-S 14-24mm f/4G IF ED DX

Yes I purchased all of those lens when I purchased the camera. The wife surprised me with a Nikon AF-S 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR lens last night for my birthday.

But available in appropriate size. I should have called it a CPL.

Ordered several filter sizes last night. Thanks

Yes, I agree about Ben. He has a voice made for FM radio. :D

I'll look and see if I've missed any of his. I wish he'd lead a photo course somewhere.

The Foundations series is very good. I signed up for Lynda in January and use it every week.

Circular polarizing filter. But take it off for things like the model railroad, doll house, circus display. Ag exhibit, baby chicks being born.
Who sell CPU Adorama, amazon, eBay. Best advice. Get it to fit largest lens, and adaptor rings to use on smaller lenses. Later Ed
Talked to Ken Travis this morning.

Do you have a brand suggestion?

Consider a CPU filter or similar to avoid reflection from display glass.
35 mm and 50mm 1.8 would be my choice. Being from Chicago, been there many times.

What is a CPU Filter and who sells them?
