I am going to the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago this summer and will be taking my D7100 with me. I know that this will be an indoors/low light situation. Digital Photography is totally new me. I have only have been at this for about 6 weeks and I need advice on what lens I need to use. I have listed the lenses I currently own and I am not adverse to purchasing a lens for this situation if needed.
NIKKOR LENS:
1. AF-S 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR
2. AF-S 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR DX
3. AF-S 35mm f/1.8G DX
4. AF-S 50mm f/1.8G
5. AF-S 14-24mm f/4G IF ED DX
6. AF-S 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED VR DX
Thank you,
Neal

Consider a CPU filter or similar to avoid reflection from display glass.
35 mm and 50mm 1.8 would be my choice. Being from Chicago, been there many times.

Do you have a flash & does the museum allow flash photography? If you do & they do, the 18-140 should cover most situations. That way you're not lugging a whole bunch of glass around regretting the weight.

I would suggest the 35mm f1.8.

Old Hippy has been the museum. I would go with his suggestions for a 1st trip.

It is a circular polarizing filter. It should cut most of the reflected light glare off glass cases.

Circular polarizing filter. But take it off for things like the model railroad, doll house, circus display. Ag exhibit, baby chicks being born.
Who sell CPU Adorama, amazon, eBay. Best advice. Get it to fit largest lens, and adaptor rings to use on smaller lenses. Later Ed
Talked to Ken Travis this morning.

http://www.amazon.com/Hoya-Alpha-Circular-Polarizer-Filter/dp/B009IYBR56/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1401065217&sr=8-9&keywords=circular+polarizer
But available in appropriate size. I should have called it a CPL.

You will have the most flexibility re. the lighting with your f1.8 lenses however if you don't mind boosting your ISO to 800 I would consider taking the 18-140 for the greatest all around flexibility. However not knowing just how dim the venue is you might be pumping the ISO with the fast lens which nixes the 18-140. And get a good CP. Good luck and have fun. ;)

See if you can rent a 24-70 F2.8 - You can use your D7100 at ISO 1600 and still get good results, as long as you don't crop much. Together with your 14-24 F2.8 (its not an F4, or you might have a 12-24 F4), these will be your best solution. If you use a polarizing filter, it will further diminish your light by about 1 1.5 to 2 stops.

I agree with old hippy and Jethro. Use the fastest lenses you have; i.e., the 1.8 apertures.

I have loved fast glass for 50 years or more and today when I go out with my bag of lenses I always take my nikkor 17 - 55 f2.8, my 50mm 1.4 and my 35mm 1.8. I agree that the 35mm 1.8 is a great lens to use, period. I also agree that you should forget the CP as it will be counter productive by cutting down on the already low light. Good luck.
