We have water. After many failed attempts, the plumber (who kept saying that he used to be an electrician) found what he thinks was the problem - a broken ground wire from the house to the well. He ran a cable from the top of the well, across the front of the house, and in through the front door to the pressure switch. Naturally, we can't close the front door. Since we have no basement, I'm going to dig a channel around the back of the house and run the cable into the utility room. To play it safe - and legal - I'll hire an electrician to make the final connections. Fortunately, it's been warm lately - 30s - 40s - so cold air isn't pouring in through the front door. I figure I'll seal the gaps somehow and use the side door. I'll have to start digging before the ground freezes again.

It is nice to have water, though, even with a wire running in through the front door.

Unless it’s a ground fault breaker, it’s not expensive. Just make ABSOLUTELY sure the main breaker in the panel is off, or better yet, pull the meter or switch off the disconnect if there is one, and be VERY careful working inside the panel as the lugs to the main breaker (or fuses) are still “hot” with the main breaker off. Even then, I like to check the voltage on the busbars to the breakers before working in the box. I’m sure you already know all this, and maybe I sound over-cautious, but the transformer (pole pig) feeding your house can supply huge amounts of power (many hundreds of amps at 240 volts) into a fault before its breaker trips, and a slip with a screwdriver or a hand can be catastrophic. I always hate working in a hot panel if required. It’s not hard to change a breaker, but if you don’t feel comfortable with what you’re doing, don’t do it - call an electrician.

Your right on regarding the danger of working on a box if you don't know what your doing.

Why would the wiring need to be in conduit? If it is type UF you don't need to use conduit.
Like most of the posting on this site 95 percent of them should just read and keep their option to their self, as they don't know what they are talking about.
A ohm's meter will tell any Wiring problem that you have if used properly.
I have been a electric contractor for 42 years with anywhere from 8 to 10 men working for me, I think I would have some ideal of how to find the problem.

When I do underground lay out I use conduit when possible. If I want to pull more power in the future, its a lot easier. It adds more protection against electrocution for idiots digging holes in their yard. Conduit is cheap. Its the best protection against rodents trying to eat the cable. Its good protection against punctures from people driving steel rods in the ground.

The first thing I would do is replace the breaker. All it takes to take out a breaker is a lightning strike or old age.

I'm so sorry the end of a family member has come to you. We are faced with a similar situation. Our little girl ( Pekinese ) is now 20 years old, mostly blind and deaf and can only chew soft foods. But she still tells us when she needs to go outside to do business so we will help her as long as she's not in pain. Just as you, she has become one of our children.

Jerry, they do the same thing with used cars which they claim was just sold to get you to come in. They list hard to find vehicles on craigs list and try to sell you what they actually have.

So it is fine for bigots like you to want to take care of our own unless they came into this country like your relatives.... without papers and prior permission.
You conveniently forget the DACA immigrants that are not on public welfare, do not commit crimes at the rate of your family, and enter the military. All these things you supposedly espouse as positive traits. Oh right, they are brown so new rules for them, kick them out.

It's hard to debate you while your off your medications and unable to write a coherent sentence. You assume facts that are not in evidence. All my relatives came in via Elis Island and therefore had all the documents needed and passed the health test required along with having on their possession the $100 to show they had means to support themselves. For your information DACA is a program for young people who have entered this country illegally providing for a two year extension before deportation. It was not a process of citizenship. It was an Obama program created in 2012. 2012 was an election year. However I did not bring up DACA, you did.
What makes you think anyone in my family has ever committed a crime? Some have already distinguished themselves in their lives and many more awards will probably be presented to them in the future. I am proud to state that we are a Gold Star Family. In closing, race, color, or creed has nothing to do with anything I have written. And please show more respect for the flag and turn it upright where it belongs.

Yes. Those are the people who I am talking about. Which included those who were brought here in chains and those who were brought here as indentured servants. They got off the boat and did not ask what this country could give to them, but rolled up their sleeves and began to work for their living. Some got right off the boat and entered military service and died for this country. Those were the people who paid for the benefits of this country. I'm tired of paying for people brought into the United States and given a free (to them) education at the expense of our people who couldn't afford to go to a college. I'm tired of seeing our own kids saddled with educational loads while foreigners walk away debt free. I'm tired of hearing of our people who die from lack of medical care while illegals get free health care. I'm tired of paying increased insurance because illegals chose not to buy insurance. I'm tired of politicians buying votes by catering to illegals. Its time we take care of our own.

What rational makes it right to offer and extend free benefits to illegals that have not contributed to our system while denying these same free benefits to our own citizens? When national health care is part of our country's system, then and only then, should we offer what's left over to those who do not or have not worked to build what this country has to offer. I heard both my parents state to members of our family, "those that work eat first" . Its about time we FIRST take care of those who have worked to make this country great.

When you're done with that $100 lens, I'll buy it from you for $ 200!!

Tempting, but if I did sell to you, it would be the one I bought for my wife. I'll think about it. I also have the 70-210 f3.5 to f?. It focuses faster but I prefer the f4 model. I think its sharper. Thanks Leon.

Part of our farm is a oak and cheery tree farm. It is not unusual for Pileated Woodpeckers to nest and feed on the cherry trees. They feed on the bugs in dying cheery trees. When I cull the sick trees from the stand, the number of Pileated drastically decrease. Impressive bird.

The Nikon d810 is a fine camera. Although I have 2.8 lenses, I often use a Nikon 24-85 vr for when I walk/limp around. Its very sharp, practically a constant f4, light weight, and very sharp. A good copy used can be had for about $300. It was introduced at the same time as the 24-120 f4 vr, and 28-300 vr. For me weight and equipment balance is a big consideration for a walk around lens.
