I came upon this woodpecker while out shooting Hudson valley photos.
Pileated Woodpecker, (pronounced Pie or Pee - Lee - ate- tid). About a foot and 1/2 large and a bit on the destructive side. Lots of farmers don't seem to care for them.
I've seen a bunch of woodpeckers but never one of them in the wild. Nice catch.

Thanks, I was wondering what type of woodpecker it was.
Nice catch, that one looks more like "Woody" than all the woodpecker's I've seen thus far.
We've had one visit the old pine tree stump in the front yard in the last two years. We've been here over 20 years and never saw one before.
Part of our farm is a oak and cheery tree farm. It is not unusual for Pileated Woodpeckers to nest and feed on the cherry trees. They feed on the bugs in dying cheery trees. When I cull the sick trees from the stand, the number of Pileated drastically decrease. Impressive bird.
Very nice download, Larry and even better when double-clicked!
Nice.
Happy Holiday Season!
I hope to see one, one day. I think one overflew the house, but can't be sure. You really got a great picture!
