A polarizing filter will be your best friend in Fall colors.

Roger that. The ND filters are for the waterfalls around Brevard. Weather reports past Thursday are pretty positive for the Ashville area.

I have a D800 as well. For sake of travelling ease, i am only taking my 24-300 street sweeper lens, along with the 28-70 f/2.8, collection of ND filters polarizer and warming filters, and a good carbon fiber tripod with Acratech GPs ballhead. If you see me, holler and we will swap tips!! (Dash mounted GoPro, too).

Thanks to all who have helped with suggestions. I have made notes of each and every one. We head out tomorrow, arriving in Asheville area on Oct 16. I will be happy to share the results. Happy hunting to all.

Great Gene... I liked checking my FP's in Aperture and really missed that when I switched to Lightroom... I found this based on someone else here on UHH... it is great having access to them again.

Glad it was worthwhile!

I concur. Great recommendation; another jewel from within the UHH treasure chest. Thanks for sharing that link!

I do photo tours here in Alaska, and I am continually impressed with the Canon Power Shot SX series. The zoom is phenomenal, and works wonders with wildlife. (If you are coming to Alaska and not interested in wildlife, you are one of a kind). The aperture range is limited, but I do not think there is a better camera for the money, unless you want to get into some serious money. Being a Nikon user, I think you can put stock in my recommendation of this Canon.

Thank you PVR8. A friend lives in Bevard, and her recommendations about the trails and waterfalls there are one of the things drawing me. I appreciate your feedback. I will have to post some photos in November.

Greetings hoggers! I am gearing up for a trip to Brevard, North Carolina in October where I hope to visit places like Great Smokey Mountains NP, Nantahala NF, the Mountain Bridge Wilderness and the like. I am listening to a local friend and reading up on foliage forecasts for the Ashville area, and there is divergence of opinion. As I am travelling from Alaska and have to make reservations somewhat significantly in advance, I would like to make an educated decision. I am planning on spending a week. Anyone that has any first hand knowledge of the area and recommendations as to timing for foliage and/or must see sites would have my sincere appreciation for sharing their insights. Thanks!

I never found a tripod worth buying at Best Buy or any big box store. Of course, I came to this conclusion after buying one!

Glad to hear it, on your behalf, but the ship has sailed for me.

However, I can tell you that 2 years ago we completely re-worked the customer service team; within the last year we replaced the previous insurers with New Leaf; over the past 12 months we introduced a wide-range of enhanced quality checks and controls into the factories producing our Flashpoint brand.

As a result our positive feedback from customers has increased:

There have been instances where I have run a single exposure through Nik's software with good results. Others where I had to digitally bracket shots (helps if you have RAW files in the first place). Works best to bracket, but in those cases where you only have the one shot and want to enhance it, you work with what you've got!

Adorama doesn't even rate as high as my last choice anymore. I was a customer of theirs for years, but got over it as a result of poor customer service, horrible insurance programs, and poor quality house brands.

Photography for me is an act of devotion. The dharma. The challenge to do justice to God's handiwork. The world is worth looking at. "Making photographs can help us to understand what our lives mean to us." (Ralph Hattersley)
