I am studying to be a photographer and I was just wondering if there was any advice anyone could give me?! I want to be the best I can be!

Shoot, then shoot some more. Then after that, shoot even more. Use you imagination. Shoot in the city and shoot in the countryside. Shoot the different seasons. Have fun.

After spending much time investigating cameras, lens types, brands, Sony's new technology, I took the plunge and purchased my new DSLR camera & Lens. I used prior to my jump a Canon PowerShot SX110 IS. I loved the camera, but after 2 years of use, and time spent taking pics in other modes other than AUTO, I just had to upgrade. I have in my possession a Canon 60D with a Canon EF-S 18-135mm IS lens. Love it.

Congrats. Enjoy!!!

Mac - by your own words it was staged and in the second raising two of the original soldiers were not there.

I don't know how you can say, "By your own words it was staged." I didn't say that at all, unless you want to call everything that ever happens "staged." The second flag raising was to replace the smaller flag with a larger flag, that's all, not for a photo op. There was no flag pole to run the flag up on, the flag was attached to a piece of scrap metal which was then lifted to an upright position.

A wonderful example of your own objectivity! If it's so easy, why don't you do it?

Cheers,

it is easy to be objective while reporting. ! answer the 5w's and the h in your story. a concept every journalist is taught first thing. 2) avoid use of imflamatory words, details that don't add to the story (for example if the story is about a bank robbery, does the fact that one of the robbers is a polygamist relevent to the story, or would by mentioning it, inflame opinion against the suspect) Reporters need to only report the news and be consistent about it. you should cover the occupy movement the same way you cover the tea party(never gonna happen as surveys show 90% of all journalists are liberal democrats)

Is there still a tea party?

Well, if you want to be that way about it, the photo of MacArthur coming off the landing craft when he returned to the Philippines was also shot more than once until it was "right."

That is true.

A very well known photo was the flag raising at I believe Iwojima(sp). Famous but staged from what a photographer saw but didn't shoot in real time. So a photo can lie.

How can a reporter even unbiased report truth when the leader of our country as well as others tell half truths and lies representing them as fact?

The well known picture you refer to wasn't staged. A smaller flag was raised first and an officer sent for a larger flag. The raising of the larger flag is what was photographed. The photographer wasn't on Mt. Suribachi at the time of the first flag raising, but was for the second.

xpane,

Chris Matthews? Objective? Are you kidding me? He's had more opinions debunked than any reporter I know of! But then look at who his employer is....MSNBC, the most UN-watched, liberal-liberal cable network in the history of news reporting. They are a joke and so is Matthews. Do yourself a favor and at least upgrade to the second highest-rated network, CNN. Find someone on there who will also have a liberal opinion but can at least make a decent enough case for their opinion.

Hmmmmm. Well at least we know that Rush and Sean, and Bill are totally objective and unbiased and have never had to apologize for telling an untruth.

I cannot get the lens hood off my lens. It seems to be stuck. I don't want to put too much pressure by twisting it so hard I damage the lens. I have a Nikon d90 with a 18 - 105 mm vr lens attached.

I have the same lens and hood. The hood "snaps" when you put it on, and it will take some pressure to "unsnap" it. If you are still unsure, can you take it to a camera store to have them look at it? Also, I would NEVER put any kind of penetrating oil on a camera.

Just got Aperture. What is the best way to learn this. Video, Books, etc. Would like something like 1st step, step 2, step 3, etc. Thanks bvargas

I use the book "Aperture 3 Portable Genius" a lot. You can find it at book stores and on line. Also as BigBear mentioned you can get on hands training at an Apple Store.

How many people here believe that any form of reporting CAN be totally objective and balanced, let alone that it ever is?

Cheers,

None. As mentioned personal bias will show through.
However, reporting has gone way beyond just someone trying to be objective and their bias showing. It seems (to me at least) that there are little if any attempts at objectivity. That all reports are deliberately Slanted.

Hello,

I signed on for the first time back in October, but this is my first post on the forum in regard to a question. I've been taking pictures as a hobby for years and have taken several classes during that time, but I'm still very much an "amateur."

I'm interested in purchasing a new lens for my Nikon D40.
I'm basically looking for the most versitile lens for general photography; one that I can leave on the camera and not have to switch too often.

Someone suggested a 70-300mm lens, which I'm very interested in, but I would love to get a few more opinions before I make my final investment.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

I use the Nikkor 18-105mm as my walking around lens, It offers everything from wide angle to short telephoto.

I guess some people, like rock climbers, need to use the often included plastic LCD protectors, but I cannot stand them. They obscure the view, fall off pretty easy, and get dirty. I haven't used one on any of my D70, D700, D7000 series and wonder who else cannot find the darn thing.

I use the LCD protector on my D90 and it has never fallen off. It has some scratches, so it has given protection to the screen. I do not use the screen to focus, frame, etc., only when I am changing settings.

But my question is,,,,i am looking for a lens to take pics here at the beach,,,,(pelicans diving, shrimp boats, sea gulls and the such,,,,,,i just purchased a Nikon D5100 last week,,,and it was the bundle package with a 18-55mm vr zoom NIKKOR lens as well as a 55-300mm vr zoom NIKKOR lens.....

I use a D90 and have the 18-105mm kit lens and also the 55-300mm. I have recently retired to Florida and have been to many different beaches to shoot, I mostly use the 18-108mm. The 55-300mm will give you an effective 450mm. How far away is what you want to shoot?
