I remember my dad had one of those from the time we were living in Arizona. How times have changed.

I have received (1) Wall Street Journal on correct day in last two weeks. I live in North Alabama and PO manager says transfer point in Birmingham is closed and one in Atlanta is closed also. This week I received a bunch of WSJ papers dating back to Dec. 4 but did not get that day's paper. I am 85 years old with Progressive Pulmonary Fibrous and not long for here at best. Sure don't need Covid.

I used to have delivery problems with my WSJ and my local paper, too. Finally dropped WSJ and switched local to e-edition online; now it's just a couple of clicks away, no trip outside every morning in the cold or rain to pick it up, and I don't have to recycle it. Makes life so much easier.

Exhibit 1.
This morning I took Murphy for his morning walk when a small flock of Lesser Goldfinches landed in a tree about 30 feet away. Without moving I dropped the leash, brought up the trusty D7200 with the 70-300 VR lens and fired off 23 shots in short bursts. Feeling confident that one of the shots would be a keeper, or could be turned into a keeper in PP we went on our way. None of them could.

Exhibit 2.
Earlier this year Murphy and I found a bright red male Cardinal in an Ocotillo plant. I fired off about 50 shots in short bursts from where I stood. About 10 of them could be called keepers except the Ocotillo stem was growing right out of the top of the Cardinal's red crest. No problem, I took them out in PP.

There are many more instances of careless and laziness I could catalog. I have become a "Spray and Pray" photographer all because in digital photography "pictures are free"! Back in the film days, I don't remember exactly because I'm old and forgetful, but buying and processing a 36 roll of Kodachrome was between $10 and $15, and you had to wait a week to ten days to get your pictures back from Kodak. I was careful in my stalk, bracketed my shots and each set of 3 cost me about $1.

Conclusions
I am not as good a photographer as I once was! Free pictures and improving PP skills have encouraged me to become sloppy. The only thing I can't fix is focus and I would not be surprised if that coming soon.

If you have a junk drawer of retired camera gear, dig through it for an old 256 MB or 512 MB card. Stick that in your camera and you will quickly cure any "Spray and Pray" tendencies.

I think the horse is the most realistic petroglyph I have ever seen. Most look like the first one. Of course, the horse can't be very old since the Spanish introduced horses into the New World in the 1500's.

Hey all,
I enjoy reading the post every day. I have a question about aspect ratio, I am buying a Nikon d810 and I was watching a video on the 810. In this video the statement was make that most photography studios shoot in the aspect ratio of 5:4. So my question is has anyone used this ratio and if so what size prints have you printed? What ratio do you use and why?

Thank you.

I always use the full 3 x 2 sensor. I paid for all of the sensor, and I plan to use all of it. If I crop the image, I do it in the computer; then I can vary my crop later if I'm not satisfied with the original.

From my window I can see a small island in the bay. I bought the Phone Scope which is supposed to attach my iPhone Pro Max to my telescope - too unsteady. So I’m looking for a camera that will zoom in on the island and take sharp photos of the wildlife which is not visible without a strong telescope.
Any suggestions for a low cost camera for taking sharp distant images?

you might consider a used Nikon p-900. You should be able to find one now from people who have upgraded to P-1000. Or find a P-900 or P-1000 that you can rent for a day just to see if it will do the job.

I never swap out a partially used card from one camera to another. Cards are cheap enough to have several spares ready to go. I format all spares in the pc and they are ready to go into whichever camera I'm using, be it Canon, Panasonic, or Nikon. I usually reformat it in the camera before use if time permits.

While the P900 is a nice camera I would say not a great camera for sports. Especially indoor sports. I can’t speak to its video capabilities as I don’t shoot video. I don’t think the P900 would be an upgrade over your D3200. As far as I know it does not shoot raw which you really need for inside gyms or rinks. The other limiting factor is the burst rate. While is can shoot up to 7 frames per second the buffer can only handle 7 frames then it takes a couple of seconds to clear the buffer. That is really limiting.
Burst rate and more important buffer capacity does matter for action sports. I believe your D3200 also has better auto focus than the P900 which is another important factor shooting sports Unfortunately sports is the one genre where equipment does matter. You need fast lenses and a body with a decent burst rate and buffer and good auto focus. I have shot sports (hockey and lacrosse)with a D3100, D7100, D7200 and D500. The D500 (3x your budget)is made for sports and my personal opinion is the D7200 ($150 more than your budget) is the bare minimum you need to shoot sports. while it is a great camera it is still very limiting for sports.
To give you perspective I am not a gear snob. I am a budget shooter I love finding lower cost solutions to photography. I have successfully shot ice hockey and had images published with just a 50mm and 85mm 1.8 on the D7200 I do not own a 70-200 2.8 although I have on occasion rented one. I have had lacrosse images published using a $150 70-300 AFP lens with the D7200. So while I don’t think you need to spend crazy money to shoot sports I think you may need something better than a P900. As for video your D3200 has better video capability. Over all I am not sure where the P900 would be an upgrade. In my opinion the best upgrade to the body you have right now would be lenses
I hope this perspective helps rather than muddies the water for you
Good luck.

I have to agree; I'm not familiar with any Nikon cameras other than my P900, but it really is not suited to shooting sports unless that "sport" is a chess match. The time for the buffer to clear when using the burst feature is especially irritating and you will miss a lot of shots while waiting. It is much better for shooting non-moving objects at a distance.

if it were mine, I'd be very worried my external hard drive was on its last legs, and I'd be looking to replace it and move any good files to another drive as soon as possible.

Many of the original cable channels, which originally provided great science or history programming, have degenerated into reality shows, competition cooking, supernatural, or shark week type, sensational programming. I really miss the original History Channel and Discovery Channel content.

I'm not familiar with the 4490, but looking at your download, do you have your "target size" set right? You might want to experiment with that.
