It is the same as what happened with the music arena: Mobile phones and similar products offer less quality than CDs and upper-level equipment, but the phones are easy to carry and perceived to be cheaper, since they serve multiple uses. Nikon seems to be de-emphasizing consumer cameras and even announced more concentration in Medical Imaging products; they are going a different direction.
Canon is probably doing some similar things, as all the manufacturers will, eventually.
