Yes, I do have high quality, multi-coated UV filters to fit most of my lenses. Mostly B+W MRC and Hoya HMC or HD/HD2. Those filters are stored separately in my camera bag... I install and use them occasionally... Such as when shooting at the beach where there is blowing sand and/or salt air. The latter is particularly hard to clean off lenses. So it just seems practical to be a little cautious. I also might use if I were shooting photos at a paintball contest... I do use them at times when I'm right next to a dirt race track or similar.

I did not consider air borne particulate. It would be prudent for me to purchase the filter for those occasional situations and then leave the filter off under good conditions. Even though this subject has been hashed over on the hog before and I have researched the subject it is discussions like this that help people see details they have missed. Thank you to all who have helped me with this.

Hello Neal

Forget the uv for protection use the lens hood for the front of your len's for protection. But if want a glass type filter get a CLEAR GLASS one from Hoya or B+W.

So I guess I was misinformed on what type of filter was needed for protection. It was a good thing I decided not to buy the filter recommended by the sales person at the camera store last weekend.

Thanks I am just trying to balance the plus and minus in my mind since this lens purchase was considerable for me and I am not experienced in this hobby. If I was still young and dumb I would throw all caution to the wind, but I am older and wiser so I like to limit the chances that I do something stupid. I have jumped into this hobby with both feet since starting in April so I just need a reality check every now and then. I know most of the folks on the UHH are good hearted and helpful. I have dealt with some of them and they are honest and straight forward.

FAQ: Which Photographic Filters for Digital Photography?
http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-26502-1.html

"A UV Filter is used to reduce haziness created by ultraviolet light, to which photographic film and sensors are sensitive, but not the human eye. A UV filter passes all or most of the visual spectrum, and blocks ultraviolet radiation. UV filter quality is important."

I have read many opinions about the pros and cons of adding a UV filter to a lens for protection. I have seen them priced from $10.00 to almost $300.00. I just purchased a Sigma 150-500mm lens and am unsure if I need to buy one (86mm) and how much to spend if I do. All opinions welcome. Thank you.

I know I have heard mention here various on line camera retailers, I would like recommendations. I am a Nikon owner, looking for lenses ans accessories and I have grown tired of the only specialty camera retailer in my area, as their prices are becoming ridiculous. I guess this is inevitable when all the competition close their doors.

Carter's Camera Cottage and B&H are the two I trust.

That's why you got my last Nikon mount Neal, as I mentioned when you ordered, I was waiting for this Photokina release announcement to see if they would really get it to market this month or not.
I still have one Canon mount left and then I will have no more Sigma 150-500mm lenses available here, except for the occasional used trade-in.

Thanks MT picked up the package today. Very happy with the lens and Gimbal.

PS
Kia the cat says best box ever send more.

I have had very bad luck being an early adopter so I do not jump when something new hits the market. I like being about 1 to 2 years behind the curve. I almost jumped on the Tamron 150-600 band wagon but had second thoughts at last moment and am glad I did. A person I work with has the Sigma 150-500 and I got a chance to try it out on my D7100 and that is what pushed me not to wait Photokina to see what changes. Getting to use one before buying is the easy way when you venture into new territory.

I pickup my 150-500 that I ordered from MT tomorrow at the FedEx store. I am still glad I bought now and did not wait.

Your best bet is to consider recommendation of MT Shooter: http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/user_profile.jsp?usernum=9172

He both rents and sells long lenses, tripods, and gimbel heads for nature photography.

I purchased a Nest Tripod from him and I am quite happy with it. I plan on purchasing the Nest Gimbal also when I pick up a long lens this fall. The Nest product line seems to be well crafted.

I am currently using Aperture and since I may to may not like Apples new software, I have started looking for a replacement. First off I have no interest in any of the Adobe programs. They are high quality programs, I just do not feel comfortable with them. I am test driving the OnOne suite right now. Does anyone have experience with DxO Optics pro or Capture One Pro software. Your input would be appreciated.
Thank you,

Welcome to the world of Tamron. It has nothing to do with B&H, they simply sell the products supplied to them from Tamron. I personally think its almost criminal that Tamron is so well aware of the issue, but isn't providing the fix for free but instead making everyone send their lenses back at their own expense to get the fix installed rather than shipping them with the fix already in the lens. They have known of the issue since early February, stopped ALL SALES until they figured it out, then resumed sales with no fix installed. Perhaps some of the newer production lenses have the fix installed, but ask Tamron and they will not tell you at what serial numbers that was done, because they have no idea if or when it was done. All they tell you is that you should send your lens in for the upgrade.

Thanks MT. I think I will purchase something else for my D7100. Maybe in a year or two they will have the kinks worked out. I can do with out the frustration while I am still learning about the hobby.
