Once you add the adapter, I am not sure you are really going to enjoy much of a weight advantage. The units are only 1/2 lb different before the adapter. If weight is really your aim, you need to consider a smaller sensor. You should look to a different reason to move to the Z line.

Yes...11 oz before the adapter is significant to me. I also figure that, over time, I will replace my F mount lenses with the Z mount to further reduce the weight. And, I still want to stay with Nikon and the DSLR like upgraded technology.

One negative is that the body is a little short for me allowing my pinkie to slip off. I made a little base from a scrap of wood which makes it more comfortable ... for me.

I have seen this concern before and it puzzles me. I used a Nikon FE for over 25 years, there were thousands of working pros who used the Nikon FM variants. These cameras were 1.8 inches shorter than the Z models. I don't know about other users of these models but I just "hooked" my pinky under the camera. I never gave it a thought, just went merrily about my way taking pictures.

I feel also that the FM/FE and even the slightly larger F3 fit my hands much better than any DSLR. I don't hold the camera with my right hand but rather with my left hand. I actually find the Df is too tall for comfort.

That's true, the left hand supports the camera while the right works the buttons (or worked the film advance lever) For the record I still use a D600, apx 3.6 " on the right side, and even with smallish hands my pinky curls under the camera.

Thank you all...Everything said so far is right. Logical choice for me is the Z6. However, part of my brain says...'you bought the D810. And now it looks like you are trading down to the Z6. What's in your head!'
Jerry, thanks for the links..I've read them all and more. In fact, Imaging Resources does great comparisons of Z6 vs D810; Z6 vs D850; Z7.. as well.
Then I look at the $1400 price difference and my other side of the brain tells me that, for me, it doesn't make sense!
The move I made from the D700 to the D810 was huge in quality and range. 12.1 to 36.3... made a big difference as well. I haven't moved up to the D850 as I did not see enough reasons to do so. I was looking for wireless/bluetooth and a tiltable screen. Also, looking for GPS tagging. Then the Z's came out. Lighter makes sense. And it has all but the GPS. At first the single card was an issue. But if many of you, who do have the Z's can deal with it; then so can I.
So, one one shoulder stands the Z7 gremlin that says..'I'm the best and latest..buy me'. And on the other shoulder is the Z6 gremlin that says..'hey schmuck (jerk or idiot)..why are you spending the extra money when I do everything that makes sense for you!!!'.
Still not sure.
Thank you all...Everything said so far is right. L... (show quote)

...other than the money thing, why not keep your 810? I bought an 800 new and still have it anchored by a tripod in my "studio" and have dedicated it to those situations where I want those extra big files...it's a fine camera and so far I have no desire for *more!* I also have a Z6 and love it, and purposing it vis a vis my other bodies was not a hard job...nothing else I have can shoot silently. Every tool you have should have a purpose, otherwise you're a collector.

In my opinion, go for the Z6, 24 pixels is more that enough for any full frame camera. You don'd really need all those pixels in any camera unless your shooting mural sized photo's. The same reason you didn't really need 36 pixels in your D810. The Z6 costs less, shoots faster than the Z7. Good luck in your decision.

Go for the Z6. If you don't need or want the higher megapixels don't waste your money. I love my Z6 and I have no issues with enlargements.

I hadn't given that much thought. You made me go dig out my FM2 to see if I was imagining things. The difference is the grip. With the Z6, like DSLRs, your fingers are wrapped around the grip. It feels totally than having your fingers flat on the front of the body. The body of the FM2 isn't 1.8 inches shorter. Excluding the prism there isn't a big difference. The spacer on the bottom makes it more comfortable, at least for me.

...excellent woodwork, but I'm with that other guy; I just wrap my pinky and shoot on, never gave it a thought. <shrug> It's a bitchin' camera! (...but I will welcome the battery grip, doncha know.)

You seem to always to be a Fuji enthusiast. So much so I tried to find a page with your work. Nothing. Then I looked here for postings in the Gallery. I did find a few. If I were you, I would learn more than making snapshots or keep quiet. Fuji would be embarrassed.

I reached out to a friend who has a Z7. He and I are going to meet this weekend and I'll try out the camera. More so for the mechanics and 'feel'. The fighting sides of my brain have not come to a conclusion..yet.
Thanks to all again for your feedback.

Buy one of each and a couple of new lenses. You'll be good to go and sleep well at night ... until the bill comes in.

Looking forward to your findings.

I've been very happy with my Z6. It performs far better than my old D7200, and surpassed every expectation I had. I have a sneaky feeling, if you are comfy with the larger RAW files, you would prefer the Z7. My understanding is the Z6 is slightly better in low light, and because I enjoy starscape photography I opted for that camera. I have amazingly little noise in my photos even t high ISOs.
