I have the D lens, which I hardly use anymore. I'm going to post it for sale on eBay.

I had the old one, sold it, and bought the new one. I loved the old one, even though slower to focus than the new one. Took a lot of great photos with it.

The older version was my go to lens until I bought the Tamron 150X600 G2. I took a lot of fine pictures with that old Nikon lens. If it's not broken I don't see how you can really go wrong at $300. But I admit mine has not seen the light of day since I bought the Tamron lens.

Just wanted to thank everyone for their input. I purchased it last night and think I’ll be happy with it.

NOT the same lens!
AF and AFS are totally different

MT Shooter is correct on this, as usual. I have had both lenses. Optically the lens is nice, but the newer version is outstanding with its ability to track and lock on focus. The optics of the new one are very nice. It is my go-to lens in the field. From sidewinders to swallows in flight, the new one it is a very versatile lens.

You will have the reach OK, but it is a little slow- hopeless for birds on the wing, but otherwise OK.

It's a great lens, and at $300, a great buy. Just came back from Africa and it presented me with some great shots. Go for it!

What does everyone think about a Nikon 80-400mm for bird and wildlife photography. I have a chance to buy one for 300.00 from a relative. Has anyone had one?

I have both versions of this lens. The original version was "OK" but it sometimes "hunted" for focus and it was slow. The later version is "WOW !". Quick focus, fast VR, great clarity. If it is the newer version, jump on that great deal. First photo is the original lens. Second photo is of the newer lens. Notice the difference in outward design of the lens tripod mount.

Great buy if it's G lens. I sold it for a200-500 which is sharper lens as it is only a 2.5 zoom which is much better than a 4x + zoom.
