What does everyone think about a Nikon 80-400mm for bird and wildlife photography. I have a chance to buy one for 300.00 from a relative. Has anyone had one?

i believe there have been two versions of the lens. I have one of the older ones, and the focus isn't as quick as it could be, and supposedly the newer one has better focusing.

Excellent lens, but slow focusing due to its mechanical screw drive AF system, which also precludes it from auto focusing on entry level Nikon cameras.

I have the new one.
$300.00 is a very good price—unless there is something wrong with it.

I have one and am very happy with it and I paid a LOT more than $300! It is convenient to use and while, of course, the IQ is not exactly like the really expensive prime focus lenses, it has certainly been good enough for me.

Here’s the one I’m looking at, very clean no known issues, with the bracket.

I know it is the older one, because a few years after I got it the new one came out with better focusing. But I don't know how to tell the older one from the newer one. The newer one is more expensive.

Yes. It looks just like the photos posted, but I don't know how different the new one looks.

Best Buy had the new one on sale, once---almost half price.

For $300, buy it.

Note too the "D" vs "G" with the AF-S G being the newer model. You can also see in this image the "G" version has been "gelded" with the removal of the aperture control ring.
