I met a 22 year old South African woman who told me that a similar law was passed in South Africa. She said many rapes were occurring by bad guys grabbing girls and women stopped at red lights. The woman I met wants to move to the US because she doesn't feel safe in her home town. DrJ

I spent several months working in a central Brazil town. After midnight you could go thru a red light because of the crime related to stopped drivers. The result: people would zoom thru red lights and people with green lights would stop so they didn't get hit.

Mark - NJ drivers have been running red lights for years, with no help needed from the Legislature

not that much traffic in Utah (population 2,995,919...area 84,808 sq. miles) Imagine them doing that in NJ? (population 8,944,469 and area 8,723 sq miles) IT WOULD BE CHAOS!!! FYI NJ is the most densely populated state in the country.

There are a lot of stupid laws - made by stupid politicians. Why wait 90 seconds? If a car is approaching, waiting 90 seconds could make going through the light impossible. I can understand requiring a complete stop, but that would require judgment on the part of the driver. "I think I can probably make it through the intersection before this truck gets here - maybe." There is no way a law like this will not be accompanied by collisions. They would be better off installing smart traffic lights. How many times have you found yourself sitting at a red light in the early morning hours with no cars in sight (except for that cop hiding over there)?

Yes, although hiding cops love drivers like that. My son was leaving work in a mall at 11:00 PM, and he was given a ticket for not coming to a complete stop at a mall Stop sign. The cop even showed him where he was hiding. When my son went to court, there were many people caught at that Stop sign, at at least $100 per person. I now stop and count to three before proceeding through a Stop sign.

Which is the common sense thing to do.

Especially at late night or early morning, no one around for 50 miles and the primary direction is not yours you can wait 10 or more minutes waiting with nothing around.
Or the light could be broken which I have seen more than once.

I understand how you find it a positive step. Personally, I have never seen a light stay red for more than a couple of minutes.

It's not a <pressure> plate in the road, it's a loop of wire that detects the presence of steel, like a metal detector.
When I had a problem with a red light that wouldn't change I would lean my motorcycle 25° to 30°. That would help sometimes.

I like this idea which was part of the article.

"Lawmakers are also expected to consider a bill filed by Sen. Dan Hemmert, a Republican, that would prohibit drivers from entering intersection unless they are able to make it through before the light changes."

I hate it when some inconsiderate pig has to try to scoot through as the light is turning red but there isn't enough space for him to clear the intersection so the cross traffic is stuck until dumb ass gets out of the way. Sometimes he doesn't get his fat ass out of the way before the light cycles to red again for the cross traffic so they are stuck waiting again.

I think we already have this in Indiana - all except for the waiting 90 seconds and the part about common sense...

(Would it make more sense to fix the traffic lights?)

In California, red stop lights are merely a suggestion.

Like Mark I have driven my motorcycle thru a red light when the detector couldn't identify that my bike was there. I think the cop that would ticket a person for that is the one lacking common sense. Also like you, Mark, I lived in Alamogordo while working at Holloman AFB so I know what those temps are like. My wife and I also put quite a few miles on our 2014 Honda Accord Touring, love the car. When were you at White Sands? We were in Alamogordo in 65 and 66.
