It's not really running a red light. It's more like treating a red light as if it were a stop sign.

I just don't get this one. I'm sure there will be some who agree with the bill.

In California, red stop lights are merely a suggestion.
With all those red light cameras in California I doubt it. I listen to a lawyer from Los Angeles on the radio and a lot of people call in about "bogus" tickets for red lights issued because of a camera.

I live in the Los Angeles basin and I can assure you that traffic cameras aside, the number of people running red lights is rampant. I, personally, don't trust a green light without looking to make sure that someone is not going to run the light. This is a lesson I learned after getting T-boned by a female driver that ran a red light doing in excess of 55 mph. Traffic cameras seem to have little or no effect on the number of people that violate that particular traffic law. Furthermore, many cities have abandoned traffic lights because of the challenges that have been brought up in the court system. As an example, the camera cannot identify who was actually driving the car. It can only identify the license of the car. As a result, tickets are mailed to the owner of the car rather than the actual driver of the vehicle. It's difficult to prove that the owner was the driver.

Saves the entities from having to install sensors to monitor traffic flow and automatically change the lights.

I've been in that situation a few times. I simply proceeded thru the red light after thoroughly checking for traffic.

Exactly. I treat it as a flashing red light.

I was born, raised and lived in California until 2005. I knew California drivers were bad but it looks like they have gotten even worse since I left.

I met a 22 year old South African woman who told me that a similar law was passed in South Africa. She said many rapes were occurring by bad guys grabbing girls and women stopped at red lights. The woman I met wants to move to the US because she doesn't feel safe in her home town. DrJ

Years ago we drove from Pilansberg National Game Preserve to Joberg at night. About a two hour drive through mostly uninhabited countryside.

Before we left the park the driver told us that for security purposes we would not be stopping for any stop signs or stop lights. We would slow down somewhat for stop signs but never stopped.

I should also mention that the vehicle had 72 security and monitoring sensors on it. For example, if we were stopped for more than two minutes or if the weight of the vehicle changed by more than plus or minus 50 pounds and the driver did not respond to an inquiry from the security monitoring company an armed helicopter would be dispatched to our location immediately.

We had one incident when we slowed for cross traffic at a very remote stop sign. Several men ran at and in front our van from the ditch along side the road shouting and waving machetes. We sped up but unfortunately did not add any hood ornaments to the vehicle.
