Since retirement I've been able to travel and enjoy photographing many of the places one reads about, lots of fun. One of the benefits offered by the Chase credit card is a refund of ticket cost in the event of a medial cancellation if you used their card to purchase your ticket. At my age the insurance cost was $382 so it looked good to use the advertised card benefit. We applied and received the card. Then when my cardiologist grounded me, I filed a claim for $2100 with the documentation. That was in August 2018 and it is now February 2019 and I'm still going back and forth with them. On 6 occasions they wanted more documentation which I supplied. But, each filing takes at least 10 days or more to get an answer and when I would inquire after two weeks, they wanted more documentation. Finally in early January they "settled" the claim and sent me a check for $100. Yes, one hundred. More calls and a verbal admission they had made a mistake and he would fix it and email me that afternoon. He didn't. 5 more calls until today and it seems that the payee isn't Chase but a third party and THEIR correspondence didn't correlate. They have been waiting 2 weeks for Chase to answer them to clear up the discrepancy. They couldn't pay until that was cleared up. Another promise, that they will email me this afternoon. Anybody want to take a bet on that! Guess what credit card I'm going to cancel as soon as I see the refund! BTW, the other ticket which I bought and paid for with coverage from Alliance through Delta Airlines, paid me in less than 6 weeks. And I think they are the third party for Chase, based on what's on the Chase web page.
After my dealings with Chase several years ago, I wouldn't give them a dime of my money. They've managed to legalize deceit and theft.

DO you have a local news station that does consumer protection type programs, fear of the press works. IF it's hits the air somebody is going to get fired!

Do you have a friend that is a lawyer? A letter with his/her letterhead might speed things up...
All of the credit card companies are the same. They are like insurance companies, and will do anything and everything to avoid paying out when they are supposed to.
Another advertisement from a reputable bank, that doesn't deliver the promised goods. But, I can assure you, Chase is not the only institution that doesn't deliver as promised. My bank sends me ads of new things they want me to enroll in. If, I find them to be exaggerating, I just ignore them. I only enrolled in one. A new card security system.
Ask any travel agent or insurance agent about vacation insurance. It is specifically designed to reimburse you for a whole list of reasons, including medical, of course. My wife and I have bought it on occasion and I don't recall it being particularly expensive. We've never made a claim but I know people who have without problem.
I hope your medical issues get squared away and you can get traveling again!
LFingar: Yep, I've used the travel insurance companies. This was the first trip I've had to cancel. As I said, Alliance paid with no problem and I just thought I would save $382 and use this card "benefit". Even us old fogies make a mistake every now and then. Once. Dr says I can travel in the states now but don't book South Africa again anytime soon.

Nobody will get fired, they'll just lose their quarterly revenue bonus. Corporations set up these programs that are intended to take your premium $4 and not deliver.

Not necessarily. My brother-in-law hit a deer with his BMW a few weeks ago. Allstate gave him the names of several body shops that they prefer to deal with (in NY you can go to any body shop you want, regardless). He offered to drive it to the shop. They said No, we'll send a rollback, which they did the next day. He declined a loaner, since he has a pickup. Work was done quick and extremely well. Looks as good as new. No hassles, no debates about cost. Nothing. Aside from being without the car for 5 or 6 days everything went perfectly. He only had to pay his deductible, like most everyone else. He's more then happy.
Not all companies are out to cheat you. Most know full well the importance of customer relations.
It's a shame the OP had problems. It happens, unfortunately.

Hope you get a chance to get to Africa. That would be incredible I would bet!

I’m glad he had a good experience, but it will be interesting to see if Allstate cancels him later. Had Allstate for 30 years - houses, cars, life, personal liability, everything. First time we had a claim (hurricane damage on an inland house, not beach property), they cancelled. Now I have USAA. Unluckily, we had 4 comprehensive (no deductible) claims on the same car within the first three years I was insured with them (two tree limbs, and two cracked windshields) and they didn’t protest, or question the claim and didn’t cancel. They managed everything - rental car, repair company of my choice - piece of cake - one call to them, one call to the body shop to schedule. Painless. A great insurance company (so far).
LFingar: Yep you are absolutely correct. I went to SA 2.5 years ago and it was, without any reservation, the best photo shoot I've been on. That's why I wanted to go back! And on insurance companies, TriX, I've been with USAA since my first car in 1958. And any claims have been just as you described, no problems in 61 years and counting. Told you I was an old fogey.
I have had American Express Gold since 1994, never a problem. They have always taken care of me and any issues which may have evolved!

I've had USAA since I received my commission in 1966. Never had any problems plus the annual "rebate"is a great bonus.
