Should I pack my 8lb tripod in my suitcase or try to bring it onboard as carryon or is there a better way?

If it won't fit inside a carry-on bag, then they probably won't allow it in the cabin. Call the airline and ask. I'm sure they've been asked before.
Thanks for the replay. My tripod does fit in my carryon if I separate the ball head.

If it fits in the bag, there should be no problem.........I've done it before
Before the airlines went crazy and began to charge $50 for baggage I would put my tripod in its own carrying case and check it. I always disconnected the handles on the head and loosened the legs as a precaution to something getting broken. That worked fine until it became an extra charge. Now I put it inside the tripod bag, parts detached, and put the bag inside a duffel bag which I check. That does not address the question of carrying it on the plane. If you can break it down enough perhaps it will fit inside your carry on luggage. Good luck.
Within the past year I've both carried it on the plane with me and packed it in my check-in luggage with no problem whatsoever.
The first time I every pack my tripod, my entire suitcase was stolen and never recovered. AA refused to pay for electronic equipment like a tripod? Go figure
In the past few years I have just carried it on in my hands since it will not fit in a carryon and had no problems. Most airlines, I have flown on Delta, AA, KLM, and united, do not consider it extra carry-on.

I just came back from a trip and hand carried my tripod. I simply placed it in the overhead with my carry-on bag.
