I bought my Ipad primarily to use for client presentations offsite. I have thousands of images, all arranged in folders, many of which contain sub-folders.

Sadly, the Ipad will not recognize sub-folders when importing. Consequently, I must import each folder individually (there are hundreds), or the Ipad mixes all the images together, making it impossible to find what I'm looking for.

For a product that has such a reputation of user-friendliness, I find this oversight quite disappointing. Any other time I copy my files, my devices recognize all the individual folders.

Not trying to hijack the thread. Just a heads-up to the next problem you may encounter.

Respectfully, you cannot use an Apple product with a 'Windows' mindset. That was hard for me! However, once I stopped doing that and recognized the merits of the iPad, it opened up a whole new world for me.

Network your ipad to your window p.c. You will need a file sharing apps which is about $5.00. Then the whole of your picture file on your p.c. is at your finger tips. It's not rocket science to set up I managed this in 30 mins. You will have to set your p.c. to a static I.P address which again is very easy to do search on u tube or start an account on flickr and upload to your account so long you have internet access bingo your quids in you can make your account private or friends only there no need to go world wide

It would have been nice if Apple had put a USB socket in its iPads, but they chose not to do that. I know Apple makes a Camera Connection Kit that plugs into the iPad socket. It lets you insert a USB cable or an SD card to transfer photos.

Being the cheapskate that I am, I got the $5.00 version on ebay. When I connect the adaptor and insert an SD card, nothing happens. When I connect a cable from the adaptor to a camera, the pictures appear immediately, so I can still upload from a camera.

My question is, does anyone know a better way, short of emailing, to get photos from camera or computer to iPad?

----------------------------------

Update: Someone emailed me saying that he bought the Apple adaptor, but it would not work. Apple tried to get it going for three days and gave up. I'm glad I got the cheap version.

I do have iCloud. So this is one way using my PC computer.
In your My Pictures folder there is a sub folder named Photo Stream. Inside the Photo Stream folder contains two addional folders, one is My Photo Stream which downloads automatically to your iPad by placing images into it. The other is named Uploads which is your IPad photos that you can upload to your computer to edit or save to a hard drive.
I think Apple support is great and your best bet is call them.
I am sure there is a zillion ways, but this works for me.

So the Photo Stream and My Photo Stream are part of iCloud? I don't have them on my PC.

Screen capture by simultaneously pressing the home key, and an/off button at the top of your iPad, takes a snapshot of the page you are on, go to photos and find your pic

I am not sure whether it is an iCloud feature or a sync from the iPad. If I knew how to do a screen capture I would show you those folders. I just know that the folders were there when the person from Apple asked me to look. I did nothing to add them. It is a pretty cool deal. I have saved all the keepers from my iPad to a hard drive keeping the iPad clean and using the photoframe slideshow feature.
I know this didn't answer your original question, but I mostly show what has been edited and keep them safe in n additional spot. I would still call Apple. It could be something quite minor. 1-800-MY-APPLE

Ok now maybe I am the confused one. I always get a trash icon and have deleted many photos that way. Are you saying that I am not really deleting photos?

When you delete them, they are gone! If you've edited and saved, the edited copy will remain in the camera roll until you delete or move.

Hi UHH's...

Be careful with storing your pictures on the iPad...
I have done this using the camera connection kit to connect by USB to my camera. (Camera takes CF cards so SD adaptor for the connection kit is redundant).
Anyway, the first upload of pictures is fine...
The 'blurb' tells you that when you upload your next cards-worth of images it adds them to the same library...
Well, yes it does, but a number of the originals also get deleted! This happened everytime I uploaded new images...
I got fed up with this keep happening as it is not always easy to tell if you have all your photos safe? It was only by chance I noticed something wrong with pictures missing and when I cross-referenced them with the originals still on my card, (luckily, I still had them), the issue was discovered.
I never did solve the problem... Even with Apple's help so I now use an Epson P7000 for back-up and viewing...
Thats been perfect...

Here's how I copy photos from my computer to my iPad, which requires no spcial hardwarae or software except what came with your iPad. I have a PC, but there must be a similar version of this method for a Mac computer.

1. Take the charging plug for your iPad and plug it into a USB port on your computer, with the other end plugged into your iPad.

2. This will cause iTunes to appear on your computer. If it doesn't, launch iTunes yourself.

3. Wait for the computer and iPad to sync up.

4. Under DEVICES in the left column, click on the name of your iPad, which causes 8 columns to be displayed on the right side of your screen, for the 8 types of data you can sync.

5. Click on the far right column, PHOTOS, then check the box labled SYNC PHOTOS FROM xxxxx.

6. xxxxx is a selection. You can pick PHOTSHOP ELEMENTS, which lets you pick all or a few of your subfolders defined in the Elements program (assuming you are using Elements). You can also pick CHOOSE FOLDER, which lets you select any folder on your hard drive. The last choice is MY PHOTOS, which means the PICTURES Library, and you can select all or a few of your folders in that directory.

Whichever folders you pick, they will all be copied, along with their contents, to your iPad, by iTunes. From then on, every time you hook up to iTunes, the folder(s) will be synched with their equvilents on your iPad.

The way I use it is to define several folders in the PICTURES Library, like Diving, Family, and Other. I created preset exports in Lightroom for those directories, already set to the optimum screen resolution for my iPad. I regularly export new photos from Lightroom to those folders, and manually delete old photos from those folders, and they get synched to my iPad whenever I plug into iTunes, a very quick procedure, which easily keeps the pictures on my iPad fresh and interesting.

But if you ever happen to pick another folder than what you have been using you just deleted all the current photos on the IPad and replaced them with what is in the new folder instead of just adding the new ones. What a great design.

If you use Carbonite to back up your computer files, you can get the Carbonite app for your iPad. You can then transfer anything from your computer to your iPad using the app.

But the beauty of the method is that you do no picking after the initial setup. You just synch and it all happens automatically. Besides, the idea is that everythign you keep on your iPad is a duplicate of something on your computer, so you did change the folders and accidently delte everything, it simple to get it back.
