It would have been nice if Apple had put a USB socket in its iPads, but they chose not to do that. I know Apple makes a Camera Connection Kit that plugs into the iPad socket. It lets you insert a USB cable or an SD card to transfer photos.
Being the cheapskate that I am, I got the $5.00 version on ebay. When I connect the adaptor and insert an SD card, nothing happens. When I connect a cable from the adaptor to a camera, the pictures appear immediately, so I can still upload from a camera.
My question is, does anyone know a better way, short of emailing, to get photos from camera or computer to iPad?

Update: Someone emailed me saying that he bought the Apple adaptor, but it would not work. Apple tried to get it going for three days and gave up. I'm glad I got the cheap version.
I use the adaptor method but also use Skydrive or Dropbox. I like Skydrive better - more free space and a lot cheaper if you buy more, $50 for 100 gig/year. Works like a charm.

Yes, I forgot about Dropbox - very handy program. I don't use enough space that I have to pay for it.

Jerry, there should be two connectors for the iPad camera connection kit, one for the SD card and one with the USB slot to directly connect the camera to the iPad. I have found that the SD connector seems to work best if you put the SD card in it first and THEN insert it into your iPad connection down near the "button!". Also be aware that if you have your iPad in a case, sometimes that prevents the SD connector from making a solid connection, try it without the case on the iPad and my guess is it will work fine! Let me know how it turns out? Rich ;)

Seems Apple has made it hard. I have new ipad 3, it does not accept flash drive or SD card with adaptors. There is an app called Photo Transfer App which you can transfer photos or videos from Comp to ipad or ipad to comp. For Apple it's all about making money.

It seems they've done a good job with that lately. They could cut the prices of all their products in half and still make billions. I guess there's no such thing as too much greed. :D
There are a number of free or low cost apps. I've used the Photo Transfer App from ERCLabs for over a year and 1000's of transfers. $2.99 and I would recommend it highly. (It moves photos and videos both ways from PC to iPad or iPad to PC. It doesn't move from/to cameras)

Do they get moved through Wi-Fi, a wire?

They get moved through Wi-Fi. When you activate the app, it asks if you are sending or receiving. It then gives you a URL that you paste into a browser. If you are going PC to iPad you drag the photos into that browser and it moves to the iPad. If you are going iPad to PC, you swipe the photo and it appears in the browser. Formats and file sizes remain intact in either direction.
I have the genuine apple one and it works just great. Suggest you grab the real thing
Which is the genuine Apple one?
Sorry the genuine apple camera connection kit

I said you paste the URL into the browser. That is obviously incorrect - you type it into the browser.

Someone PM'ed me saying that his "genuine" Apple device didn't work, and Apple couldn't get it to work.
Mine works OK with a USB cable, so I'll stick with that.
I bought the Apple version, before my trip. My Canon uses CF cards so I don't have any experience with an SD card but the usb adapter works great. I transferred my photos from my camera to my iPad and then put them in dropbox so I could have enough room to upload the next days' photos.
