Queen Charlotte Islands, BC, May/June 2006. Lots in the wild. If you are looking for lens recommendations, my 70-300 came up short. A 400 would be too much to carry.

has anyone gone to photo the eagles in Vancouver and / or AK ?

Not in those places. Only Florida, Alaska, Michigan, and Tennessee.

The easiest the find were in Alaska. The most interesting was in Tennessee. At least that wasin my case.

Just don't pick up any feathers unless you have a federal permit for that specific feather.

The eagle feather law provides many exceptions to federal wildlife laws regarding eagles and other migratory birds to enable Native Americans to continue their traditional spiritual and cultural practices.

Under the current language of the eagle feather law, individuals of certifiable American Indian ancestry enrolled in a federally recognized tribe are legally authorized to obtain eagle feathers. Unauthorized persons found with an eagle or its parts in their possession can be fined up to $250,000.

however, even a recognized Native American can't just pick up a protected feather (govt calls it "eagle parts")... you have to petition the Govt to receive eagle parts. For example, Zoos have to gather up those "eagle parts" and send to the Fed repository in Colorado for the Fed's distribution to approved Native American groups/individuals.

With tongue firmly in cheek, you do realize that AK is Alaska, don't you?

We have been seeing more eagles in southern WV in the last few years. I'm lucky enough to live about 4 miles from a fish hatchery which attracts both Eagles and Osprey and the hatchery acts like a buffet table for these birds of prey.

Hmmm... In my imagination I see some guy sitting in an office checking out porn on his computer or playing Candy Crush on his phone, waiting for the occasional package of "eagle parts" to be dropped off by UPS. And when occasional shipment does arrive, it probably gets re-packed and sent to whoever curried the most political favors by raising the most money for the incumbent party during the last election.

I can't help but wonder how many people get paid with our tax dollars to maintain an "eagle parts repository" and handle "distribution to approved groups & individuals". In the overall scheme of things, it's sure to be a very tiny percentage of overall federal expenditures going toward these specific purposes. But when you multiply programs like this by many hundreds of thousands.... well it's no wonder we're running a $1 trillion deficit!

These are very well-intentioned policies to protect eagles... But it's reached the point where "the government" has their fingers into wwwwaayyy too much!

Rant finished!

Nice eagle pics, though folks!
