I use Windows XP and have no problems. Picassa, etc. are open RAW files. You should have received a CD with your camera to walk you through this. GOOD LUCK! Welcome to UHH!

RAW filles are much larger than Jpeg, so you want to make sure your Notebook has the moxie to work those files. There is a really decent program out there to work RAW files, It is produced by Nikon, but should work. It is called Capture NX2. It does amazing things with a RAW image. I'd research it before plunking down any money to make sure it is compatible. Free program will work as well, but they are not as in depth as the the ones you pay for. Good luck on your project.

Curious, where do you find Picnic on Picasa?

Hello friends. Been following but just registered as I spent the whole day yesterday on a problem and have no immediate friends that are interested in photography like I am to help me along in my problem!

So here is my scoop and I am hoping that someone can assist me so I can finally relax -this issue has been driving me crazy!

So 1) I have a brand new Canon EOS 60D and I want to start exploring RAW and HDR photography. How do I read a RAW file on a Windows XP laptop? Through research, I have learned that apparently RAW files canoy be read on Windows XP?

2) The ultimate reason I want to read my RAW file is to use it for a HDR software. I explored Picturenaut and Luminance yesterday and could not get either to turn out anything that resembled a HDR photo. I am guessing it is because I used a JPEG file as opposed to a RAW file? I watched some utube videos on the picturenaut software, I did everything correctly...the only difference was that I was not using a RAW file.

Can anyone offer any assistance with this? I am not very tech savy so please try to speak in laymen's terms! I would appreciate it.

Oh and I tried to download this new Microsoft RAW reader in both Chrome and explorer and I could not get anything to work.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a good free HDR software?

In order to create HDR photos, you most start with RAW files.

Creating HDR Photos $18.98

That is absolutely awful. Not HDR at all.

Not true. Maybe it depends on what software you're using, but Photoshop is quite happy to work with HDR with or without raw.

As for XP (other posters' comments), Microsoft has been trying to push it over a cliff for years, but their business customers refused to upgrade to Vista, and forced Microsoft to continue support. No question about it, there are programs that won't run under XP because they use operating system features that were added later, but you can usually check the system requirements to see if that's a problem.

Both Photomatix & Luminance work with jpeg, in fact, I would be surprised if there were any HDR applications that didn't.

I have a Sony. It has an HDR setting on it. I found out reading the manual, that it will only shoot HDR in JPEG! It will NOT let me use the HDR setting in RAW. FYI. Canon may be different.

Is this notebook the only computer you have? Does it have a USB port?

What you might try, maybe using a friend's computer, or if you have a desktop with a cd/dvd drive, use that one: copy the disk that came with your camera to a flashdrive, and install the program from there.

Tips for the techy part would be great! So once I download Picasa do I just upload the pictures right from my camera since my computer ("the middle man") cant read them per se?

Yes, just download your images to your computer (My Pictures). Even though Windows will not open them (there will be just a Windows icon thumbnail showing), Picasa when it pulls them in (cataloging) it will automatically open them.

I don't know how old your laptop is but the video card that is embeded in the motherboard may be an issue. I have a 12yr old laptop with XP and have tried to use Photomatix and a couple of other HDR programs ( including some freeware programs). I can get them to install but when I try to use them I get a message saying my video card is too low of revision and the software shuts down. Hope you don't run into the same problem but keep it in mind.

upgrade your laptop to windows 7 for starters then you can download the codecs that will read raw files.

You should buy an external DVD for that computer... Just a thought..

Ditto! They are cheap. I got mine for $49 at Fry's and I've seen them cheaper. Then you can use the software that comes with the 60D. The DPP software can read all of the exif data on your raw images. Even Photoshop can't do that.
