Hello friends. Been following but just registered as I spent the whole day yesterday on a problem and have no immediate friends that are interested in photography like I am to help me along in my problem!

So here is my scoop and I am hoping that someone can assist me so I can finally relax -this issue has been driving me crazy!

So 1) I have a brand new Canon EOS 60D and I want to start exploring RAW and HDR photography. How do I read a RAW file on a Windows XP laptop? Through research, I have learned that apparently RAW files canoy be read on Windows XP?

2) The ultimate reason I want to read my RAW file is to use it for a HDR software. I explored Picturenaut and Luminance yesterday and could not get either to turn out anything that resembled a HDR photo. I am guessing it is because I used a JPEG file as opposed to a RAW file? I watched some utube videos on the picturenaut software, I did everything correctly...the only difference was that I was not using a RAW file.

Can anyone offer any assistance with this? I am not very tech savy so please try to speak in laymen's terms! I would appreciate it.

Oh and I tried to download this new Microsoft RAW reader in both Chrome and explorer and I could not get anything to work.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a good free HDR software?

You should have received a CD with your camera, containing a program for reading raw images.
I don't understand downloading a program through Chrome or IE. Your program should go to your c: drive, not your browser.
Hope someone else has some ideas for you, too.

Hey thanks for responding! . You know what the problem is? My notebook/laptop does not have a drive to insert a disk into, so I tried to download the software from the canon website and it didn't work. I hope someone has some ideas too. I feel like I keep hitting a dead end! :(

To get started try Picasa3. Will automatically open Raw ready to edit and export. A free download.

First, Windows XP is your operating system. It does not include a great many features of later Windows versions. You will need a graphic editing program. As suggested before PICASA is such a program available as a free download from Google. The latest version will open raw images. THIS MAY PROVE SIMPLER THAN THE (canon provided on CD) program. GIMP is another free download but has a steeper learning curve.

2) The ultimate reason I want to read my RAW file is to use it for a HDR software.

Picase v.3 will open raw files and has an hdr feature. There are better programs for hdr production, however. Suggest you GOOGLE "free hdr programs" and check to see if any one of the results can work within Windows XP. Then choose the one that gives the results you prefer. Keep watching this forum for hdr results. You will see a great variety of results based on personal preference.

Good Luck.

Picasa is free. Your Canon software should also be free and available for download from Canon's website. Properly speaking, HDR should be composed from several photos taken on a tripod at different exposures. You can fake HDR with a single exposure.

Tips for the techy part would be great! So once I download Picasa do I just upload the pictures right from my camera since my computer ("the middle man") cant read them per se?

Alternatively, you could buy a computer for the DVD... Just a different thought. ;)

I have a small touch screen computer that came with no DVD drive, not sure why not because it is not that small, but anyway I bought a DVD drive for about $30 or $40 I can't remember but it is worth it.. I do not think that Canon will allow you to download the software, I think that you actually have to have their CD's to load.... Things like that make the DVD drive worth having.
