My first reaction to the image was, "Why's this so flat looking?" I don't think it has anything to do with you being at fault for composition or editing. It looks looks flat because it has few if any shadows, few if any bright spots, no white caps on the water, no sun in the sky, no sails at full mast or distinct cloud formations and no large vessels to enhance your subject.
I just think that Mother Nature conspired against you getting a good image. Composition is fine, lagniappe or no lagniappe (which means gift with purchase) you just didn't have much to work with.

I think you could be right Stoshik. It's just flat and blah....a snapshot for my memory. Thanks for commenting.

Nice photo, and I recognize it. It's located right off Orient point in an area boaters call the "race".

Yes that's right!

You asked what's missing and how can you give it "pop". To me the answer is simple: "It is All About the Light". My suggestion would be shooting in the Blue or Golden Hours. Or you can cheat and use Photoshop. :-(

I like it Larry....at least it now has a bit of mood.

I like the ferry, I think I'd like a little more sky and less water, I'd experiment with a bit of contrast, Just my style though, YMMV, Bob

Thanks Bob, it's definitely back to the drawing board with this one.

I had to look up "lagniappe" in the dictionary! (Love the lighthouse, btw...)

Heh...it's a great word isn't it. Thank you Linda for finding a more attractive word than my blasted photo!

I think its a great photo. If you feel that you absolutely have to do something with it, perhaps enhance the sky.

Thanks for the suggestion and taking a look.

Generous use of CPL would add some "pop"

Nice photo. Would it be any better taken at late afternoon with different lighting or maybe with a sunset sky. If the boat were a little closer that would make it interesting also. You may not have had a chance to do that.

Well, it would also have been better if Rodan was perching on the top of it.

Seriously, I didn't have the option of taking the shot with different lighting, had to work with what I had at the time. Thanks for the comments Issa.

For me, this is close to being well composed, but misses the mark. I would place the lighthouse in the lower left third intersect line. That would get it out of the "center" of the photo. I would have tried to get the ferry more into the frame, not at the extreme edge. There is way too much water showing, but cropping so the lighthouse moves lower to the left would solve that. I would also enhance the sky for some contrast. Just my opinion...

Thanks for your detailed comments Nikonbug. I am posting two more edits incorporating what some of you have suggested. Both edits have been cropped 16:9. Hopefully these are less flat and more interesting.

If you’re in LR, tone down your highlights and whites. Try a little debate and then see where you are.

Thanks for the suggestion Mizzee.

Nice composition. Maybe a little too much water in the foreground but looks nice overall.

Thanks. There are additional edits on page five with less water.

Wow, great edit. Shortening the foreground will further enhance the composition. (I need to move beyond the very basics in PS, i.e., fewer mogul skiing you tube tutorials and more PS.)

I agree. Thanks for taking a look.
