Photographed off eastern Long Island. Do you find the composition pleasing or lacking?

Hahaha.....nice word. I was debating whether to take the ferry out as a possible distraction. But, you like it so I will leave it in.
Thanks for commenting Linda and have a great holiday.
Very nice shot and Linda nailed in on the ferry.

Thanks for commenting Mike, but how can I spruce it up. Something seems lacking. I don't think it has any "pop."

OK if I download it? I am going to look up my notes from a tutorial on "pop" and see if anything works. If so, I will share it and the process with you.
It's a great photo the way it is.

Sure, go for it, and thanks for asking.

I agree with Linda that the ferry is a bonus and adds to the interest in the composition. Perhaps you could use a layer for the sky and increase the tones and contrast slightly and give the image some pop by doing that.
This definitely has promise. The horizon line is a bit to close to being centered for my liking. This causes a conflict between the secondary importance of either the sky or the water. The vessel sailing off the right edge of the photo may or may not be all that much of an addition. Sailing away reduces the importance of the relationship of the lighthouse and the ship.
If it were sailing towards the center of the photo, the lighthouse, being there to warn of coastline would play a more important role. However, the lighthouse has played a role in making sure the passage was clearly marked for the departure of the ship, as well. This one is a toss up, but my personal preference is things moving/pointing towards the center of the photograph. That is most of the time.
As for popping, corn pops. Photographs attract attention.

Got Lightroom? A graduated filter from the top to the horizon and application of a DeHaze filter will bring out contrast between the sky and clouds for a more dramatic look. If yo have LandscapoePro it would be quite easy to replace the sky altogether.

HMMM! It looks to me like the ship is approaching (See the bow wave)
RE: Composition I think that I'd try flipping the photo left to right then enhance the sky by cranking in a little more contrast and saturation (But don't touch the light or water, just the sky. Since you invited critique I felt like I had permission to play with your image (but only for purposes of the critique)
