Damn it! Was not going to buy the Z7, still have not, but curiosity got the better of me and I went to look at one. I have 2 D5's and a D850. Can hardly justify it, don't want it, well, kinda. Sold all of my Sony A7R2 and 3 cameras and lenses because I did not want multiple platforms. Now what!?!?! Dilemma and conundrum city!
Trying to not think about my confusion.

And what could possibly be wrong with Nikon D5 and D850, other than weight and physical size. What would a Z7 do for you?

A lot of UHH members said that DSLR's are going away so the OP just have to up to date. The OP GAS attack was caused by a large number of UHH members. I think he should sue UHH.

Go back a page. IDGuy posted some of the advantages of the Z6 while Bill de posted a great comparison picture of a Z with a 24-70 next to a D500 and a 24-70. DSLR's have become bulky, something that 35mm film cameras were not. The Z's are a move in the right direction.

Oops. I had a typo back there. That's a D850. Although side by side with a D500 they look pretty much the same.

Silver Dollars, especially old Silver Dollars, a much safer and far more lucrative method of spending excess money...

I an not a Sony fan. Never will be.
It seems to me, they build with planned obsolescence in mind.
They make good tv's. But how many dead play stations are there. My kids went through 3.
About the only thing Sony electronics do not make is vibrators, and who knows they might
Canon, Nikon are mainly focused on cameras and lenses, although Canon produces printers.
I have a 2004 Canon 1Ds that still works perfectly. I honestly do not think any Sony camera will last that long.

Maybe you could invent a new vibrator and get Sony to patent it, then they'll be covered for products across the entire spectrum....

I bought the Z7 to replace an aging D800. I also still have and will continue to shoot with my D500 when I need something with more buffer storage and a faster action. I cannot compare it to the D850 since I don't have that camera. I love the Z7. It is amazing how sharp the image is even at very low shutter speeds. It is so easy to just pick up and shoot without even thinking about popping it on a tripod. If you belong to Nikonians I wrote a short piece there. Here is one of my most recent Z7 photos, it was processed and sharpened as I shoot in RAW. I think you'll love the camera and it works very nearly the same, although there are differences. I like, in particular, that I can use all of the focus points in the camera from corner to corner.

From the looks of your equipment list, the next shiny object seems important to you!!!
I'd say the Z7 has a lot of shine!!! You don't need our approval.
I'll make you a deal, I won't ask you when I get MY next camera, so just buy it!!!
Or die with the money!!! LoL

The luggage is in the kids' trunk.

You should buy it, without a doubt. It is very clear that you should buy it as soon as possible.

Thanks all! All good comments. What a relief, I have made my “this morning’s” decision to wait. That could change tomorrow however. Starts all over again. Damn.

You are making a big mistake. You should go a head and buy it now. The sooner you buy it the sooner you can use it.

Most of the reviews of the new mirror Nikon say it's comparable to the D850, which you already own. The reviewers seem to be consider the D850 as the standard against which further Nikons will be measured (and in some respects, like banding, the new Z7 Nikon falls short). If you really need the advantage of a slightly lighter camera, then buy it. It weighs about 330g less than the D850, which comes to 11.64 ounces, or about three-quarters of a pound. Having used the D850 extensively, I don't find it especially cumbersome. For years, working with film, I used the Nikon F2, which weighs 840g (the D850 weighs 915g), so a D850 feels pretty much normal to me. It's really a matter of whether the slight gain in weight advantage makes that much of a difference to you.

There is one advantage for at least some of us older folks. I have 2 lenses that I used for year but over the last few years could not hand hold them steady enough, except at extremely high shutter speeds. They are both pre VR Nikkors, a 300mm F/4 AF-s and a 500mm F/4.AF-s. I started with the 300mm the other day and got good results at 1/60 of a second.

So aside from just wanting to see for myself what mirrorless is all about, I also had what I consider a practical reason.

Wait a bit to see what bugs surface with the new products. Sometimes the second generation fixes a lot of things.
