Damn it! Was not going to buy the Z7, still have not, but curiosity got the better of me and I went to look at one. I have 2 D5's and a D850. Can hardly justify it, don't want it, well, kinda. Sold all of my Sony A7R2 and 3 cameras and lenses because I did not want multiple platforms. Now what!?!?! Dilemma and conundrum city!
Trying to not think about my confusion.

If you have the $$$ then just buy it. You help keep the economy going. Besides, you want to leave that money on the table for your heirs??? I am spending my kids inheritance right now and no guilt because I earned it, not them.

From the looks of your equipment list, the next shiny object seems important to you!!!
I'd say the Z7 has a lot of shine!!! You don't need our approval.
I'll make you a deal, I won't ask you when I get MY next camera, so just buy it!!!
Or die with the money!!! LoL

I think that based on reviews that the Z7 will not beat the D5 or D850 in AF and has banding in shadows. If you need to buy one why not rent first and see if it gives you what ever it is you think you need.

The OP had Sony and now he can have the Nikon. I would say buy it.

I'd be more impressed if you showed off your photography skills with the equipment you already have, not so impressed if you can afford more....

I don't think the OP was showing off.

Yep. Everything you have done before the Z7 has been pure garbage.

I was checking out the Z7 recently at the Nature Visions Photography Expo in Manassas, VA. I was surprised to see moire patterns. The ceiling of the room had tiles with fine lines. When that portion of the room was in the frame, I could see moire patterns in the fine lines. Nikon eliminates the anti-aliasing filter in their cameras that have high resolution sensors because it's less likely that moire will occur but it occurred this time. I would look at the Z6. It has an anti-aliasing filter.

I found this online. This is close to how the moire looked in the fine lines in the ceiling tiles

I thought about the Z7, but after reading the reviews I felt the Z6 was a better choice. Since it is an addition to and not replacing the D850 I figured one high res camera was enough. If I decide mirrorless will eventually replace top spot in the bag I'll wait for the next generation.

I did learn one thing yesterday while shooting in heavy overcast/rainy weather. It doesn't have to be too dark for 'low light focusing' to make a real difference.

Good luck with your decision.

If you get the Z7 you will have multiple platforms. There is an adapter so you can use the Nikon F lenses on the Z bodies. From what I have read, this works fairly well but in some case autofocus is slower. So, you will probably end up duplicating your lenses as new Z-mount lenses are released. On the plus side, this will be a good excuse to acquire more equipment.

Not worth the hefty price tag. Perhaps the price will go down in a year or so.

If you liked the Sony mirrorless then buy the Z7/6

FWIW, not to make things more difficult, but... A professional photographer friend has been using the Z7 and sharing his work. His most recent share was a nighttime shot of the Boston skyline shot from a half mile away. T. A. C. K. sharp, no banding. You can even see into some of the windows! He’s very impressed with it and is using his Nikon lenses with an adapter with no problem. He also shoots with the d850.

Go for it - if for no other reason than you'll be able to tell us all about it. I've bought lots of things I didn't need, but I wanted them. I'm a firm believer in making myself happy.
