Sadly this beautiful historic bridge is one of the many casualties of the Camp fire here in California. So far 23 have lost their lives and more than 100 are unaccounted for. This bridge was 132 years old, the photo's do not do it justice (they were taken with an old pocket camera) I am just glad I have them. My thoughts go out to all those who have been directly affected by this devastating fire.

Here are some before and after pictures of the bridge from the SF Chronicle. Thanks for posting yours.

Hi, I don't (of course) know if you lived in New Smyrna in 98, but the fire I described started out near Lake Harney and roared through my area and up through North Brevard and into Southern Volusia. I don't recall how close it got to your area, think it got real close, or into Edgewater, but it was a hell of an afternoon and night. When it was passing my home it was moving so fast/furious you could hear the palmetto stands exploding into flame (racing across the Buck Lake Preserve, which borders the end of my street). The folks at the end of the street said deer, hogs, bears, raccoons and every other animal we have were running crazy trying to escape (even snakes!!!).

It was a bad summer, I think something on the order of 7-800,000 acres burned statewide. I never want to go through anything like that again. Smoke was so thick you couldn't see anything, but the sound was incredible. My family evacuated, but I (and many neighbors) remained. I had hoses set up at my house, and both on either side of me, prepared to fight it while we had water, luckily that held out. Hurricanes give you time, fires generally run you out, or run you down, and do it quickly.
Take care,

Oh I remember that all right. It hit Edgewater just South of me. I was at a friends house in Florida Shores and we could see the flames at the end of his street.

The so called keepers of the land refused to let them have controled burns and build fire breaks,so now they are loosing it all. Some do gooders have no brain cells at all.

This is such a sad situation! Good shots, nevertheless, Rena.

Nice photos; sorry about the loss of the bridge. The devastation is unbelievable and I feel so bad for everyone affected. The loss of life is horrific. We're about 150 miles south and have been indoors most of the time since Friday due to the smoke, a minor inconvenience compared to those affected directly by the fire. We went over the top of Ygnacio Valley Road into Walnut Creek today and the smoke laying in among the trees and houses reminded me of a smoky battlefield; it was eerie.

Rena, the fires for sure has taken way to much life and historic history of the area. Take care. Old photos are still great.
