This mill is on the former property of Jim Kirby who was an inventor. He constructed this mill in 1922 to produce hydroelectric power for his home. It is the first of it's kind, designed so the weight is resting on ball bearings. And it could turn on just a trickle of water. His property is now a 336 acre park. I've been staring at these two photos since yesterday (well, not continuously...I did sleep!). I can't decide if I like the color better, or the sepia. Anyone have an opinion? Thanks!
If you will increase the shadow detail, the sepia would be a lot better. As it is published above, the sepia is not a very good example to ask the question. There's a lot of shadow detail that can still be pulled out of the underside of the wheel and the left side of the image. It seems to be a bit underexposed and lacking in contrast. The DOF is too great for this also and I would suggest that next time, be more shallow. The sharpness of the trees detracts from the main subject, the wheel.
The color tells the story of a fall day. The sepia or B&W would be good, displayed in a collection of similar photos
color--it allows for the contrast with the foliage.
I would convert to B&W and back off the shadows.........just converting to Sepia has lost all of the detail and has no focal point
The color version brings out the details and the multitude of hues in the exposure. The sepia looks almost B & W. That would be a great subject to study for an extended period of time. Great Exposure !
I’m usually a B&W fan, but in this case I like the color more.
