On my way home from USAF, Lackland, I, by train saw the arch. It was the first time and the last time I saw it. OH how I wish I had a camera at that time.

Here's why.
The arch was not completed. From the view I had of the arch, it looked like the very top had not been completed. It seemed to be missing the last 200' connecting the left and right arm of the arch. I think it was 1965.

Check out the Old St. Louis Cathedral. The mosaic tiles inside are fabulous. It took a total of 90 years to complete the tile work.

Speaking of the arch...I understand that there's an elevator to the top. That would be a cool trip.

The City Museum----you won't regret going there! If you have kids or not, it's a huge playground of sorts that spans 6 stories or so of indoor/outdoor mazes. Everything is made of recycled industrial materials, and it's a feast of the eyes. Don't neglect the rooftop either, it has some spectacular views from the ferris wheel or the schoolbus hanging from the roof! Word to the wise, wear JEANS and Tennis shoes, you will get dirty!

The Basilica of St. Louis by St. Louis University. The church has more mosaics than any other church in the world -- except St. Peters in Rome. And the outside stone is gorgeous.
And don't forget Busch Stadium -- although it's a new stadium the tribute bricks all around the outside of the stadium are so meaningful.

How 'bout taking a trip down Grand Avenue and shooting the Fabulous Fox Theater and Powell Hall (home of the world Famous St. Louis Symphony). While you're at it, the Delmar Loop had some famous bars and restaurants, like Blueberry Hill...Chuck Berry is there tonight, according to the website. For a little extra history on the bar, look it up on Wikipedia.

I'm originally from STL and I agree with stlbob. Please avoid East St. Louis.
This city has a tremendous amount of photogenic opportunities. The zoo is one of my favs. It's free to get in but you have to pay for parking and certain exhibits. Still, it's in Forest Park and the entire area is just waiting for you and your camera!

Go to Forest Park or City Gardens. Great for people watching and architecture. I have found the old neighborhoods fantastic also. Dogtown and the Hill areas are great. Try Soulard Market for great veggie shopping and photo opts. You should definitely go to Shaw Garden the foliage is wonderful.

There is a great museum called The City Museum (check it out online). It is full old eclectic relics, architectural details, an old safe with the workings, sculptures...if I could LIVE here, I would! It's even got an airplane frame and school bus dangling from the roof. You'll know you found it when you see the giant praying mantis on the roof. I highly recommend it to anyone...but especially someone with a camera!

Yes, the elevator is...interesting. Sort of like a pod-latrine combo that abruptly rotates to the curves of the arch!

I grew up just 100 miles north of St. Louis and it was the place we would go to have some 'big' weekend fun. One weekend will only scratch the surface of things to do and see in St. Louis. Enjoy!

Made it to St Louis safely. Thanks all for the suggestion on where to go. Today we hit Busch Brewery, City Gardens, The cathedral and the Arch. Well there was a hold up in the security line today and it was me. Standing in line I divested myself of camera, camera bag, pocket contentsand my belt. Passing through the metal detector it went beep beep, well back up and try it again (dont forget the beep beep part). Now im about to get wanded, there is no seperate room to do this so people are lined up. The inspector wands me and beep beep is the reply, she does this again with the same results. Now she and I are starting to get nervous for different reasons. She ask me again to empty my pockets but my attention is on my camera gear so I give her a flip remark such as here is the lint from my pocket. Finally it dawned on me that 5 years ago I had both my hips replaced and it was my titanium joints giving the blues to the metal dector. I guess the joke was on me.

I have only been through St Louis a couple times in my life but I will find myself there this weekend. I'm turning to the great folks here on some suggestions on what to shoot. I know most non-photographers will say the Arch. This will definitively be on the list but I'll probably shoot it at night just to be different. Are there any historic area where I might be able to capture architecture.

Thanks in advance and I'll be sure to post some pics when I return.

Visit the Chain Of Rocks Bridge. It was part of the original Route 66. A bridge with a dogleg in the middle. Google it for more info.
